Any one ever camp with a fifth wheel at the campgrounds on the Skyline Drive or Blue Ridge Pkwy or is it more reasonable to camp off these roads and travel to them? I have seen some fairly big RV`s in some campgrounds off these roads. Do people take an intersecting road to reach these sites? We have a 37ft 3400RL Montana.

The only one that we have been in is the Roanoak Mountain campground on the Blue Ridge Pkwy. We got in late in the day and most of the sites were taken. We endend up with a site that was so uneven, that I could not get level. We did the best we could and left first thing in the morning. I doubt if I would go back there.

There were lots of big rigs at Big Meadows on Skyline Drive when we were there. Sites are huge and the larger ones are pretty level. Not sure, but I don't think you're going to fit through Mary's Rock Tunnel which is north of Big Meadows on Skyline Drive. (Looks like a 12'8" clearance)

We just drove part of the Blue Ridge Pkway last week without the trailer. We drove through 5 tunnels and a few were not marked. I would not pull a large trailer on the Pkway. More enjoyable to stay at a cg close by and take your time and pull off at places to enjoy the sights.

We traveled the entire Blue Ridge Parkway and Sky Line Drive in the summer of 2006 with our rig. The trailer is 34' long and is 13' 3" tall. We stayed outside the parks boundaries because of our length and wanted amenity's. We could very well have stayed in many of the park's RV sites.

The skyline drive is a great place for camping. Our favorite is Loft Mountain but Big Meadow is another pretty nice campground. YOu'll be in line with a lot of Other trailers while driving the drive.

The official guide to the Blue Ridge Parkway lists all the tunnel heights, at the center and the edge of the road. A handful are extremely low clearance.

Just drove the southern half of BRP in Sept. with the 5er. The only tunnels that would have given us problems were the southernmost 3-4, the last 50+ miles before entering SMNP. We detoured around that part. Most of the campgrounds will handle big rigs, but the choice may be limited depending on when you get there. The biggest problem we had were the low hanging branches--busted the refrigerator vent cover and lost one of the vent stack caps.

Check the tunnel guide mentioned above. You'll find there are a lot of miles in VA and NC that are free of any restrictions. The Shenandoah NP CGs are big and no problems. CGs on the Blue Ridge Parkway were designed for smaller vehicles, but if you stop in at the CG early afternoon, you will have a better choice to pick from. (We camp with 32' on BLRI) In general the BLRI CGs are under utilized, especially Sun-Thurs. Remember, none of the Federal CGs here have any utilities.

Don't listen to the naysayers. You can drive the complete BRP with your 5th wheel. All campgrounds directly on the parkway can accommodate your RV. Many of the campgrounds have pull thru sites. But the campgrounds are now closed. They closed on Oct. 31.
I drove the complete BRP and Skyline Drive in my 39' class A towing a car and had absolutely no problem with tunnel heights. There has never been a post by someone having to turn around at a tunnel because they were too high to go through the tunnel.
