I have a Sat. antenna as well as a regular antenna on my motor home, so I thought that I would look into using my DISH service.
The gal at DISH thought that I would be better off going with DIRECT. I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
She told me that I could buy a new receiver from them for $120, but If I wanted I could just go to ebay and pick one up. Then she said that she isn't even sure if it would work.
She told me that I would need to have it installed, then they would need to charge me a roving fee. She was talking in circles and even got herself confused.
I told her that a friend with DIRECT uses his service on the road and it is a piece of cake. She suggested that I call them.
OK,,, what's the hub bub? Don't I just need a second box and move the card from box to box,,, or can I just take the box out of my house and hook it up?
She said that if I get audited my account and see that I am moving my box I could get in trouble. What is she talking about???

Moving the card from box to box will not work. The card is "married" to the box when you activate the service. You could move the box from your house to the motorhome as long as the Sat. Antenna is compatable. I move my box all the time but it does tell me every time I turn it on the I'm not hooked to a phone line. That could result in a 5 per month charge if unhooked long enough. There is no way they can tell you are moving the box unless you rehook it to different phone lines during your trip. I even ordered a pay per view on our trip 2 weeks ago while not hooked to a phone line. When I got home the box just phoned home and gave mama dish the ppv info.

You might inquire about adding an additional receiver to your account at you home. then when you go on the road simply take that receiver in you rig and use you already installed dish.
I believe that the cost may be lower. Many folks on this forum do just that.
I have two receivers. HiDef at home which feeds two TV sets, and a non-HiDef receiver which stays in the MH.
When we are away form our home area, I phone DISH and have the local channels transferred to what ever city we are near. When we get back to WA, I call and have them returned to the Seattle locals, which are receivable pretty much all over WA.

Like me, I believe most folks with Dish are taking their home dish receivers on the road with them. Yeah, you are charged an extra $5.00 per month for not being connected to a phone line but it beats having to purchase another receiver which you will have to buy, get registered with Dish and still would need to pay an extra montly use fee anyway for the additional receiver. Too bad the Dish representative was clueless on the process. She should have just said she didn't know and passed you on to someone who did.

I used to take a receiver from home until I purchased a Hi Def receiver for the motorhome. As long as one receiver at home is hooked to a phone, you're good. If all you want is a standard def receiver, buy a Dish 311 on EBAY. They're cheap. Have it activated and take it with you. Simple as that.

I take the receiver from home (Dish 500) found the antenna at a thrift store for $10. I only have the one receiver so no extra $5.
I don't call or tell them anything and on the road I use the antenna for local channels.
Also I have never had it connected to a phone line and do not have to pay any extra.
What they are worried about is you have 2 or 3 receivers and "loan" one out to a neighbor or friend.
While they may never do it they can have the receivers call in to verify all in one location.

I am interested in what you just said. However I didn't quite understand.
If I buy a Dish 311 don't I still need to have my card moved to THAT receiver?

I take the receiver from home (Dish 500), and brought the antenna (make sure you get the proper one) on ebay. Built my PVC antenna base from instructions found here on RV net. I have been with Dish for years and own my own receivers. You can not do that today from what I have heard. Today you have to lease, unless you buy on ebay or from electronics store. And today the contract you sign requires you to hook up to the phone (pay for view feature) or pay the $5. My contract does not require that.

A current smart card will come with the receiver (if new, may not need one yet). All cards stay in their assigned receiver. I just sold one of my 311 receivers with the purple smart card. If you buy used get the two numbers from the receiver and check with Dish that they are able to be activated. The person you spoke with was an idiot. It happens!
