I recently found a 2006 f250 superduty V10 with 183000 km (114000 miles) for $16000. I've heard great things about this engine, but that seems like a lot of miles. Does it seem like a good deal to you guys? How many miles can these engines go for?

It would depend on the maintenance and care the engine has received so far. Also the driving environment it has been subject to. Was it previously used for heavy towing for example. Many of these V10's go well over 200k. The transmission would be the main area of concern for now. I have talked to many V10 owners who say only good things about this engine. I read once of a fleet of V10's with over 300k on some of the engines. Personally I would not be afraid of a V10 with 114,000 miles. The main area of failure on this engine was spitting spark plugs and destroying the threads. This will cost you about $1500 to repair. But the transmission is another story.

I would agree that it depends on the care it's been given. My Triton in my F-150 has 125,000 on it and it's just like new. I had the 100,000 mile tune up (not much more than a spark plug change) done about 5,000 miles ago and it was like new before that also. The spark plug issue hasn't been around since about 2003 and the torqshift transmission is the best in the industry (again, depending on the care it's been given). The miles ALONE sure wouldn't scare me.

Triton engine family is rock solid if properly cared for. Commercial and civil trucks with 150k + miles are out there every day earning their keep.

You'd probably want to take the truck to a Ford mechanic to look at the engine for evidence of blow-by or compression loss. They can also look over the tranny and running gear for evidence of abuse or neglect.

I won't say the V-10 is worn out because the V-10 is a very good engine. But 114K on a 2006 equals 36K or so a year is a lot of miles no matter how you slice it. In order to rack up those miles the truck had to be driven a lot. Most likely in some commercial application. Not a deal breaker per se But I would need to know more of the trucks history before I purchased it.

Yup, lot of miles per year. I would shy away from it and keep looking. Not only is the V-10 an excellant engine, it is matched up to one of the best automatics transmissions built. The Torqueshift is rated for a higher GCWR than any other pickup transmission available.

IMHO $16k is too much $ for a truck with that amount of miles.

As said earlier, IF it's been properly cared for, it'll take you a long way. The price for that kind of mileage is a little high. I would pass the deal by and keep looking.

You can also go to Ford, give them the VIN and they can tell you of every maintenance issue for the first 36K and possibly more. This may give you a hint as to the care and problems encountered. Also you can get print outs of the history of the truck and each owner by asking a dealer. Use the 114K as a leverage on the seller. You may get a deal. Some dealers are afraid of the V10 and won't stock them new because of MPG issues. Good luck!

Lots of miles from commercial service work or out on the highway?
If lots of highway miles and oil changed on time I would say no worries on the motor. If lots of miles of commercial service around town I would worry more about the transmission. You might have an idea with a private party but not a dealer.
