Yep.....if towing, carry chains.

Oh yes, we'll definitely be carrying chains. Already on the list for the TV as well as the TT. Thanks!

Check on buying your chains at Les Schwab 'cuz I think they still have the deal that if you buy them you can return them if they're unused.. We're heading south to San Diego for Christmas and I'm getting chains for the trailer next week. Already bought the ones for the TV a couple of years ago.

I don't even think we have Les Schwab down here. haha We do plan on doing other winter camping/traveling where there's a chance of snow so I don't expect I'd be returning the chains anyway.

Any suggestions for online ordering of chains at decent prices? Maybe tirerack.com, hmmm...need to do some checking.

Perhaps we'll pass by each other, we're pretty much going to where the other lives.

US97, for nearly all of its length, is traveling on the dry side of the Cascade Mtns. Most of the Oregon stretch is on the edge of 'high desert', in the 3-5000' range. So while it can be cold, it does not get as much snow as the mountains, and less of the freezing rain than can plague the Portland area at times. In southern Oregon it is passing through Ponderosa Pine forests, somewhat like Southern California mountains, but much flatter. North of Bend it is sagebrush country.

At the Columbia River the highway drops down to nearly sealevel. In Washington it climbs to a modest pass, drops back down to orchard country, another ridge, and then meets I90. I90 is the major EW route into Seattle, so WSDOT puts every effort into keeping it open and safe.

Now is a good time to look at the Oregon and Washington DOT sites and webcams. We just a a major fall storm blow through. US97 is dry in Oregon, but some of the Cascade passes have some snow. US97 and I90 are wet but clear in Washington. US2, a bit further north and higher, has snow on the roadway.

Thanks for the info, Paul. We're going to save the Bend trip for another time and just shoot up I-5, we have other family in Woodburn so we'll stop in and say hi to them this trip and probably save Bend for the summer.

While it is good to prepare for winter snow and ice, don't forget the tule fogs in the Central Valley. I've seen a claim (unattributed) that they are the leading cause of weather related accidents in California.

Your nearest dealer is in Turlock,330 miles, but there are any number as you go up the 5.
Beware of Woodburn 'cuz of the major shopping outlet stores. The RV park there is really nice and they have a back gate to the mall.

Couple of thoughts:

Watch the Siskous pass on I5 just south of Ashland, Oregon. Can get heavy snow if a large wet weather system comes in.

Portland area: If they get a snow/ice storm this can be a problem. You can bypass downtown traffic by taking highway 205 around downtown Portland. All freeway, can also have heavy traffic but seems to have wider lanes and mvoe better.......most days. Will not avoid traffic but is an easier drive IMHO.

Seattle bypass- Not sure how north you are going but here is an alternate route: When nearing Tacoma heading north on I5, bypass the Seattle traffic by taking 518 towards Puyallup. As you get to the bottom of the hill in Puyallup, connect with 167 north towards Auburn/Renton. In Renton connect with 405 N to Bellevue and beytond. This are all multi lane freeways and avoid several bottle necks for traffic. KOMO 1000 AM radio has traffic reports on every "4" (1:04, 1:14 etc.) Is a great resource to traffic issues so you can adjust your route as needed.

Last year the entire NW had the WORST ice and snow storm. Things were pretty much at a standstill for many DAYS!! Please watch the weather reports. Things are usually pretty mild but we do seem to have had a change in recent years..............

Have a safe trip and enjoy.
