Hey Gang,
I have a ticklish subject that I am looking for some advise on.
I understand that there is much passion around opinions involving
firearms and I appreciate your positions. Both for or against.
That said I hope we can avoid any conflict with my posing the
following question. If this post is inappropriate the Moderators
have my full support in "nuking" it.
I have been to Alaska a few time this year and my wife will be
joining me next year. We do not have the time to drive up so we
will be flying up and renting a RV for a couple weeks. (My TC
does not yet know it will be staying behind). Anyway we will be
in some pretty isolated places and I would like to have a firearm
with me. My options of getting the gun up there are all new to me
and I am not sure what would be best. Maybe someone could offer
some guidance on how I might legally proceed?
1. Buy a firearm up there. Not super cost effective especially
if I need to leave it there.
2. Fly it up with me. Never tried that but being we lay over in
Canada I would be nervous about Customs and Security?
3. Ship it to a gun shop or a friend in Anchorage? Again not sure
what kind of regulations might be involved?
Thank you for any input you can provide.
Thanks,
Mike

Place it in your checked baggage, there no restrictions for transporting a weapon except on your person.

My son moved up here from SC, and shipped his hand gun to a local gun shop, they required an Alaska drivers license to pick it up (didn't tell him that in advance). It was in his name, so only he could receive it. They don't make it easy!
You can bring a rifle or shotgun on the plane, a shotgun is better bear protection anyway. How about borrowing one from your friend?

As far as being in your checked luggage...this needs to be declared to the TSA. There is probably a mountain of paperwork that will need to be done. Absolutly no ammunition is allowed to be carried. Additionally the firearm needs to be in a locked hard sided gun case.
Go to the TSA website and start sifting through their inofrmation and contact the airline as well.
Since you are stopping in Canada that might require more paperwork.

Long gun or handgun? A non-resident of the state will have problems buying a handgun.
Can you rent firearms in Alaska?

If you carry it, your correct, they do not search checked baggage.

If it's a handgun, I took mine along on the airline in checked baggage, no problem. There isn't any mountain of paperwork to do, just a simple form certifying that it is unloaded and in a locked container locked in a checked bag. The ticket agent in Dallas/Ft.Worth wanted to see it and then you hand carry that piece of luggage to the TSA screener and tell them you have a firearm in it. Pick it up when you arrive like regular luggage and be on your way. Even easier coming back from Alaska.
One note: The handgun has to be locked in a hard case designed to secure your handgun or one of equal size. A lot of handguns come with such cases new and that makes it easy.
Good Luck and keep your eyes open....

If I ship or take one of mine it would be the Redhawk44
just for ease of size.
If I buy or rent one in Alaska I might need to get a long
gun depending on regulations and waiting periods. A slugged
shotgun would probably be my choice then.
Thank you everyone for the advise.
Thanks,
Mike

That is so they won't loose it and have more guns on the street.
