Hope I'm posting in the right place, I've found info on softeners, but can't find anything specifically addressing our question. We need a water softener in our rig and have heard we can lease one for less than $30 a month. We were told we take the softener back once a month, exchange it for a different recharged one, and we're on our way. We're wondering how this compares to buying one. We're hearing that some of them are rather costly to maintain and wonder if this might be a better solution. We're new to fulltiming and there is so much to learn! Thanks....

Returning it periodically wouldn't be a very good option if you travel with the Rv. Might check for prices of the purchase here.

Oops, I guess I should have mentioned that my husband works a territory and we spend a lot of our time in this area. When we do go farther away, it isn't for extended periods of time. So that would not be an issue....I've researched the water softeners and have found quite a few that seem very good, however we've heard that sometimes the "recharging' and/or maintenance can be costly. Is this true? Again, thanks.

We've had both the Travelsoft and On-the-Go portable softeners, and much prefer the On-the-Go (about $270). The recharging is pretty simple - pour in a container of table salt, let water run for 15 minutes, and you're done. We buy the salt at Wal-Mart for $.33 a container, but any table salt will do. It's pretty simple. The Travelsoft worked OK, but carrying a 40 lb bag of rock salt and forcing it into the too-small opening was a pain. You're smart to get a softener, aside from the improvement in water quality, you're appliances and plumbing will last longer.

I'll second the On-the-Go softener. Found ours at Camping World on sale for $240.00. We use the cheapest salt we can find usually at Wally World for $.33. We need it especially in TX and AZ where the water leaves white spots on anything it touches, if not dried immediately.

they are really simple and inexpensive...
I don' know or ever hear of a exchange on the smaller RV softeners, but there is a lot of things I haven’t heard of...
I think my choice would be to own it any way...

We have On-The-Go. Makes a difference in water quality for the MH. During our winter travels in TX and AZ. Softener needs to be recharged about every 2 weeks.

We just bought THIS ONE
A number of people posted about it in an earlier thread.
It uses a box of table salt for regeneration.
Right now we will only use it at a place in AZ where we usually spend the majority of the winter. We have been getting a build up of scale in our plumbing while staying there.

We use the Travelsoft. On the road we use ice cream salt from Wally World for about $1.24 a four pound box. When we are in Yuma for the winter, then we go for the 40 lb sack. In Yuma, as bad as the water is, a recharge last us about a month.
