Well, I thought we were done camping after our Halloween camping weekend in October. Now I've come up with a crazy plan to camp right outside of NYC for Thanksgiving. We will be staying at Liberty Harbor RV Park and taking the subway in to see the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. We also plan on taking the ferry to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. We have never camped past the second or third week of October, so this is really going to be an adventure. Thanksgiving dinner in the camper should be fun though. We may be crazy, but we are kind of excited, too.

I would say that the answer to your question, will only depend on what the weather turns out to be during your camping stay. Here is wishing you sunny skies and unseasonable warm temps. Now if it should be wet and cold, remember the saying about a bad day camping is better than....

For this southerner, being anywhere close to NYC is a crazy idea. That aside, it should be quite a learning experience. I've dry camped in WNY throughout the winter in my 4 season camper. The weather can be cold in late November. Keep the pipes from freezing and use good ventilation (exhaust fans) while cooking and showering in the camper. Crack some vents while sleeping. Those activities create a lot of moisture.

I have stayed at Liberty Harbor at thanksgiving, watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade and did my Black Friday (12:00 AM) Shopping. . There will be many who will try to dissuade you, for get them, Go and have a great time.
Be aware that you can not go through the tunnels with propane and if you take the George Washington Bridge, you must use the top level.

We have camped (electric only) in northern NY on Thanksgiving for the past four years. One night it got below 20 degrees and froze my waste tanks solid. I forgot to turn on the tank heaters but everything thawed out by noon. If there were campgrounds open up north I would be there. The weather shouldn't be that bad in NYC. I doubt that daytime temps would be below freezing. You will have a blast.

Just a thought...my son goes to school on the island. There are lots of low bridges. Not something I thought of before my trip there. Know your route.

You should have a great time. NYC around Thanksgiving is usually acceptable weather as long as you have heat in the RV. We're from the area (Jersey Shore) and think you have made a great decision. If the weather is unusual and is really cold, Oh well!!!! The parade should be a fabulous experience - just get along the parade line as early as you can and understand it will take you longer than you can imagine to get back! HAVE A GREAT TIME AND WISH I WAS THERE WITH YOU!

We camped in Virginia over the Thanksgiving Holiday and I towed through snow. The weather ended up being terrific and we had a good time. Also camped in Buffalo end of October. Take sleeping bags. The only worry for me would be towing in the snow.

Thank you to everyone who commented! Indeed, we went and had a great time!! The weather was wonderful, except for the really, really windy day. Gusts between 40 - 50 mph.

If you are contemplating a trip to NYC, Liberty Harbor RV Park is very convenient to the city. We had no problems getting to where we wanted to go.

Thanks again to everyone who commented, we really appreciate all of your input.
