We are new to full-timing and have never left Texas for the winter. Would really appreciate recommendations for RV parks in or 50 mile radius of Ocala,FL. Planning to be there in early January. Is it too late to make reservations or do parks there even take reservations?

It is often difficult to get reservations this late for January in the Ocala area. If you don't need full sewer hookup, a favorite of ours is Silver River State Park in Silver Springs. Huge sites, clean bathrooms, and a good location. However, availabilty may be limited in January. Another popular area further out is around Salt Springs. There is a National park there as well as an Encore park that is popular with snowbirds.
Unless you absolutely have to be in Ocala, go a couple of hundred miles further south. Then you will be in near tropical conditions instead of "Hill country light". My picks are St. Pete South along the gulf coast or Lake Okachoobee in the center of the state. Much warmer, a little more expensive, but worth it after that long of a drive. Check for owners of lots leasing them at nicer resorts, it may save you some serious money.
Check out Ole Mill Stream, in Umatilla Fl.. We stayed there twice and really enjoyed it.. we did stay at Grand Lake in Ocala, but was not very happy with it and it took forever to get anywhere..
Good luck and enjoy.

You might also want to check out Grand Lake Golf & RV Resort, about 10 miles north of Ocala. Lots of full hookup sites, many with concrete pads and many more on grass. The grass sites are larger and less expensive.

There a ton of them listed on RV Park Reviews: Ocala There is also one out east SR40 past Silver Springs that I believe is a time share place. Just can't remember the name. Right near the Ocklawaha River, just before CR 314.

The former Rock Crusher Canyon Park in Crystal River is now ELITE RESORT Crystal River not an ENCORE Park. The sites sit among trees and natural surroundings yet full hookups, cable tv and wireless internet, clubhouse and screened pool.
