Who's been there. Making reservations for next July. Want to be near water. What are the best sites and places to go? Any bugs that time of year?

Not too many bugs.....the millions of mosquitos keep them in control.
After a rain, all the sites are near water.....or in it.

Just kidding. My favorite park.

Best sites is a relative question.
Up front sites near the beach are shaded but open.
The ocean breeze keeps the mosquitos away and you can really feel the differnce in temperature between the front and back sites.

I like the back sites. Quieter and more private.
If your're there during the fouth, check out Parris Island for the fireworks.

Hunting Island is more of a "nature park". Check out the marsh boardwalk, pier, lighthouse, and ranger talks and tours.

If you're looking for a "resort beach", you'll be disappointed.

Sites at Hunting Island are much closer together than in most other SC state parks, IMHO. Heavy rains can make some of the sites closest to the ocean very, very difficult. We went there one time and our site literally was a very small island surrounded by an almost impassable lake of rain water. Yes, it drained rather quickly, and the rain lasted for almost 3 days, but some of the other sites were totally under water. Also, some of these same sites are set at very, very challenging angles. We had to go down a one way street against the grain and still had problems. Many sites closest to the ocean are poorly defined and that doesn't help either. A bigger rig may have a bit of trouble with some of the lower hanging trees and tighter turns in the 'upper sites'. Your best bet is to call the cg directly for specifics if you are concerned.
And yes, the mosquitos are voracious and everywhere!!!
Doesn't sound so much like it, but we really like Hunting Island SP. It's almost like being on a tropical island when the sun is out and the beach is awesome!

It's a beautiful park.

It WILL be HOT and HUMID.....and there will be bugs of many types...knats, mosquito's etc.

We live nearby and go there often, but we wear insect repellant. And if there is a breeze, it won't be so bad.

On the way there, stop a the Shrimp Shack and try a Shrimpburger...or really anything there. Across the road is Gay's seafood...freshest seafood possible...literally right off the boats.

You might even recognize the shrimp boats and scenery if you've seen Forest Gump...it was filmed all around there.

Beaufort is a great little, old South style town. Take a carriage ride it's fun.

Charleston is about 90 minutes away... a great town.
Savannah about the same distance.

If you are from the south the heat might not bother you, but we had some folks down from the north in July and they nearly melted.

We tend to leave town from late June until Sept and miss the hottest times.

If you asked for a time of year recommendation, I'd say avoid the summer and go in April, May, June or October, November early December.

http://southcarolinaparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/map_of_Hunting_Island/r/campgroundMap.do?page=map&search=site&contractCode=SC&parkId=10114&topTabIndex=CampingSpot

This will get you to a map of the camp sites. Obviously, the ones closest to the ocean will be the ones that get the best breeze. We have stayed in sites 78, 85 and 98. Some of the sites right along the ocean front are getting smaller and smaller with erosion.
This site will take you to South Carolina State Parks camping page:

We have been there NUMEROUS times and camped in every section. If you are looking at the campground map, it is pretty accurate as to the ones closest to the waves. We LOVED # 74. 40-55 are "beach front" as well as 62 - 74. The others that are on these loops are very close, but back 50' from the dune.

The campsites on these loops are close, smaller sites with very little vegetation to shield you from your neighbors. On the backside, there are lots of larger, shady, but buggier sites. We were there in July this past summer and were in #128. It was a very good size site. The truck, the teepee and the TT are on our site.
See pic.

We also had lots of visits from wildlife each and every day. The kids loved this.
