what do i get running windows 7 over xp? (i currently run niether i'm using linux).
for christmas my wife and kids are problably going to get some gifts that require a Windows OS from me so i need to get windows running on our primary home computer. i see 3 options
if i call microsoft they want $75 to talk about my licensing problem (restore cd won't accept the license stuck on the side of the HP computer).
buy a new copy of XP home full $95
buy windows 7 home full $170
is it worth the money comparing xp to 7 not linux to 7 or linux to xp.

For the price of a new tower I don't think I would spend $170 on upgrading. W7 seems to be excellent and easy to use so far and is much faster than Vista. For a few more dollars you might want to upgrade the tower especially if it is for gaming.

Upgrade or new PC, go with Windows 7. This time round, even the Microsoft haters are having a hard time finding bad things to say about it. All the rest of the reveiws are very good.
This IT person with over 20 years in the business LOVES it.
It just plain works.

Check to make sure that WIN 7 drivers are available for your hardware(printers, network cards, etc.). Also, check for compatibility with your "key" software, though you should have an option to run in compatibility mode. Since I use some specialized graphic and media software, this usually involves "purchasing" upgrades, as either the manufacturer doesn't offer free patches or early patches tend not be stable. WIN 7 does look good, but not worth it to me at this stage if compatibility issues exist, otherwise costing me many times the price of the OS upgrade for each PC.

What do you like about it in particular?
I looked on the M$ site at their top ten reasons to upgrade to 7 list and didn't find much of anything on that list that I didn't already have on my W2k, XP and Vista systems.
I saw it claimed stuff about sharing files and printers on a home network as a great feature in W7 - what the heck are they talking about? My two W2k, two XP and one Vista systems all share files and map drives just fine and all access my printer pool (color inkjet and mono laser) just fine.
None of those 5 systems have any crashes, hangs or security issues either.
I'm trying to figure out what I'd gain with W7 beyond a lighter wallet.
BTW, I am a card carrying Mac hater. I'm also no great Windows fan, I just use what works best for my needs, hence still having W2k and XP systems that continue to do what I need them to do flawlessly.

And if you haven't already done so, try the Upgrade Advisor here.
On edit: I just did it and it informed I would have to do a custom install and reload all my programs. I heard going from XP to 7 was painful. Anyway, good thing I've got a new machine coming with 7 installed.

Would not recommend an "upgrade" from Vista or XP. A clean install is very much preferred. Win7 may be installed on a 10GB partition easily and will configure a dual boot for you at install. Very unlike MS to provide this service. Dual booting was difficult at best in the past with MS products.
If XP or 2K is keeping you happy, then do not consider migrating to Win7. Sorta like if you are happy with your 1999 Buick, then do not buy a 2010 Buick. Not everyone needs Win7.
What does Win7 give you? Seems much faster than XP at several every day apps. Have to remember that SATA drives were not in use when XP was written and WiFi was just a promise back then. Like the above poster stated, "it just works". Over a year, machine on 24/7, NO lockups, freezes, or reboots. Several manufactures are dragging their feet on producing drivers for Win7 (typical). HP and Cisco in particular.
Getting a new machine with Win7 already installed would be the easiest and most painless way to go.

I gather you have a COA sticker for XP Home on your HP. Your COA key will work when an OEM XP Home install disk is used, not one from HP. It would be much easier to install XP on a partition and dual boot to keep your other operating system. I just finished XP installs on two laptops using the COA sticker key, XP Pro and Home. I slipstreamed SP2 and SP3 into the install disks.
