I agree, never had any issues with Vista or XP myself. It was always the MS haters blowing things way out of proportion. If those O/Ses work for you, that's fine. Just remember that MS will eventually stop releasing any type of patches for fixes for them.
Since I run a large network, most of the improvements in Windows 7 would only impress me and not the typical home user. Those improvements make my life managing many hundreds of PCs a lot easier.
Paul, If you wish to credit MS haters for spreading false rumors of problems, you would have to include in the list of haters, Steven Sinofsky - senior vice president for the Windows® and Windows Live™ Engineering Group who complained that he couldn't get his Brothers printer to work. You would have to include the board member who complained to Steve Ballmer that his "Vista Capable" machine would not run the Aero interface. You would have to include Jon Shirley, another board member who pointed out that some of Micrsoft's MSN application were not compatible with Vista. He also pointed out that his Zune wasn't compatible with Vista. You would also have to ignore that the vast majority of complaints came from long-time Windows users.
To a large extent, the bad feelings from many users and bad press from pundits comes from the reality that first impressions are important. Microsoft released Vista before Vista and Microsoft's partners were ready. Add that to the 'Vista Capable' debacle, and the first impressions were not good. Although their public face was "if you are having trouble with Vista it is your fault," a position adopted by many Microsoft supporters, Microsoft recognized that it shared part of the blame - read the internal memos released in the Vista Capable lawsuit. Add to that the mistake of not responding while Apple continually beat them over the head with its PC-Mac ads. No, laying the blame for the lack of enthusiasm for Vista on Microsoft haters ignors the reality of Vista's release.
Note: The information in my first paragraph came from internal emails released as the result of the Vista Capable class action suit.

Yeah, I won't argue with you there Tom. Windows is far from perfect and does have it's problems. What I'm mainly aiming at is those who continuously spout that THEIR favorite O/S (Mac, Linux, whatever) is PERFECT and was created in heaven by God himself without a single flaw, and Windows was created by Satan himself and never even boots up on any computer. Those type of people are usually called Zealots. They live to propogate false information.
I have lots of fun when I run into one of them. I ask them, if your O/S is so PERFECT, why is it that every time I load it up, it wants to download a bunch of SECURITY UPDATES, just like Windows? If your O/S is so perfect, then why are there ANTIVIRUS programs for it, just like Windows?
The response is usually dumbfounded silence, or they swear at me and storm away.
When I tested Vista beta Microsoft showed what graphic cards were capable of Aero interface and you would have to be a total idiot to not know that before trying Aero. It's amazing how people will search for comments by clueless idiots than make a big deal about it.
I imagine Steven Sinofsky, now President of the Windows Division of Microsoft would take offense that your refer to him as a "clueless idiot."
As I said, Microsoft realize that it had made a mistake with its "if you are having trouble with Vista it is your fault." Unfortunately, not all of its supporters realized that.
You kept pushing cheap Vista Capable machines, and I kept warning that people would be disappointed. Both you and I knew that those machine would not support the Aero interface, but a large number of people bought the Microsoft advertising - no matter what media you were seeing the ads, Microsoft associated the Aero interface with Vista.
Since Microsoft, at least internally, admitted that Vista Capable debacle was of their own making, I wonder why you can't.

I find it offensive that you refer to posters on this forum as 'zealots,' especially so with your definition.
I notice that your list of "THEIR favorite O/S" doesn't explicitly include Windows. If you read these forums, you know there are many supporters of Microsoft that have no love lost for Apple.
And your original statements, "I agree, never had any issues with Vista or XP myself. It was always the MS haters blowing things way out of proportion." have quite a different tone than what you posted here.

I tried to STAY OUT OF THIS ONE...I have built 4 Windows Based Pcs... The last had an ASUS MOTHER BOARD, and a nice Tower... I have had my share of Problems with Windows..so much so that windows is no longer welcome in my home..Yes I did switch... Yes I have downloaded about 3 updates to OSx in the past 5 years... Not bad do you think?? NO ANTI VIRAL SOFTWARE,,,, none...Not one Virus, or trojan, or BSOD , or "This program performed and illegal operation and will be shut down" or this program is failing to respond or "Corrupted Registry, or DLL file is missing or damaged and on and on... For me personally, MAC has BEEN HEAVEN and since the Software is made by the same company who makes the Hardware, then YOU are correct, "it is MADE BY god"...You like windows, GREAT, .... OH, by the way, MS-DOS is still under the hood in Windows 7!!! Ms =Dos goes back to 1977???? Anyway, us MAC USERS LOVE OUR MACS... If we didn't, we would TELL YOU SO...Something YOU may not realize, MANY of us Mac users are Switchers from MS... If MS is so GREAT, why are they losing so many customers??? I see Thousands and Thousands moving from Windows to Apple,,,,. But rarely if ever do we hear of folks going from Apple to Microsoft... now you can be Silent or swear at me and walk away..

Dude, I am totaly agreeing with you and you are attacking me. You are taking me totally out of context and are not understanding what I'm saying, so I'll end this conversation right now. I am not looking for a fight. Geez!

I have less problems with Vista SP2 than I do with XP SP3 or 7 RC and plan on using Vista SP2 for a very long time. Show me a link to a new PC or laptop that has Vista Aero but does not have a graphic chip/card to support it. Entry level models came with Vista Basic and you would have to be a total retard to not know it does not run Aero.

XP- pros: more mature, larger hardware compatibility (older hardware may never be Win7 capable- makers would rather sell new than rewrite old drivers), larger software base, takes less "power".
XP- cons: Old, new hardware may not have drivers written for it. Support will end sometime, less secure than 7, new software *may* not work.
7- pros: fairly light weight- will run on hardware that Vista would not, new hardware and software will be designed for it, cheap (MS is selling it at a HUGE discount), will be supported for a long time, more secure by design than XP.
7- cons: if you already have the hardware, it will probably work better with XP than 7, especially if it's over a year or 2 old (definitely if it's pre-Vista). a HUGE OS- takes a ton of drive space, may need to run the virtual XP, which takes hardware virtualization to run older applications.

I personally know three folks who switched from Mac to Windows after becoming more computer literate. The key difference is that they do not run around prostelatizing their new found religion like Mac converts, they just get on with doing the work they need to do on their computer.

I do too but wasn't going to be the one to bring this up - especially since this thread should have zero to do with Mac as it is a discussion of a comparison between two Windows products.
