Hey all, we went csmping at Calico,Barstow campground over the weekend,on Friday no patrol rode all over the hills. On Saturday Patrols were everywhere and was told only to ride on flat area trails,no mountain riding. What's going on are they trying to discourage riding in the area?

Maybe the patrols are trying to save the California taxpayers the $3000.00 fee that it cost several times every weekend to Medivac by Life Flight Helicopters for all the broken bleeding and near death off road ATV folks that break their fool heads open.

Apparently we just have to save some folks from themselves!

If your a member of FMCA, you automatically have The MEDEX PLUS emergency medical assistance program. It was first purchased for FMCA family members in January 2001, helps traveling members to effectively manage the complexities and expenses of out-of-area medical and travel emergencies.

Typically, following any incident, the area is crowded with unneeded enforcement.
Sorry for the victim and his family.

The whole thing just sucks! Just another reason not to drink and drive or ride! We've all done it!

Well for starters it sounds like it was a truck, not an ATV. And the first course of action should be enforcement against those breaking the law, as in drinking and driving, not cracking down on those legally enjoying the sport of off-roading. The state and rangers need money, how about they hire more, and pay their salaries with full enforcement of the no drinking and driving law and writing tickets for those who drive in restricted areas.
My family enjoys riding ATV's. No one who rides with me drinks till we park the vehicles at camp at the end of the day. We respect all the rules and I would expect a ticket or worse if we didn't.
As far as saving folks from themselves, we are getting a little crazy in that area. I choose to enjoy a sport that has some risks. I know the risks, and feel the enjoyment I get from my sport is greater than the risk that comes with it. It's funny I've been hurt worse fishing in the Sierra's than on my ATV (slipping down a trail while hiking to a lake) I've never been injured on my ATV. Saving folks from themselves is the excuse of the left who feel any sport other than hiking is evil. It's interesting that equestrianism sports is rated the third most dangerous right behind motor sports...all motor sports, but I don't hear for a ban on riding horses, want to see huge numbers, look at bicycles, I don't hear the greens crying about them. We need to protect ourselves from an out of control government.

Any chance they want to keep people out in the open so emergency people can get in and out without everybody ATVing on the hills/mtns whatnot? If the hills/mtns are not restricted to ATVs then why are they restricting it in the first place? I can only think of one thing, to reduce interference and allow more movement of emergency vehicles?

The not riding in the hills thing needs further research. I'm not familiar with the area, never ridden there except the Barstow to Vegas race back in the 70's. Can someone familiar with the area contact the Barstow BLM office or check their website? They should have maps showing open, limited use and closed areas for OHV use. The reasoning of being seen, rescue, etc. doesn't hold water. Besides who wants to ride around on the flat ground? That's no fun at all.
