Has anyone has this Sweet breath that smells like nail polish remover?
This is caused by high level of ketones.

Cant relate to the nail polish taste, but did have a bitter taste after getting off the reservation with my diet. More like I had drank 3 or 4 beers a couple hours earlier, I didnt though. I hate when these things happen! I have found a site that is solely diabetic disscussion with professional nutrisionist hosting. Its "DLIFE.COM". The best diabetic disscussion and info including thousands of low carb low cal recipies.

Never went into Ketoacidosis.. That is however a danger.. I have had high ketone levels but never that high.

Though not as good as it once was since the loss of our fouder. It was once described as the best on-line resource for diabeteics by no less than the ADA (Then they set up their own web page and... well. that's a long story)

I had that sweet smell just before I was diganoised with diabetes. Not only that urin would smell sweet. I also had a yeast infection I didn't even know was possible in men.

If you've ever been on the Atkins diet then you've experienced Ketoacidosis as the whole point of the diet is to keep your body producing Ketones.
You can get test strips, KetoStix, to test your urine for the presence of Ketones at the pharmacy.

I KNOW THAT THIS IS ALL CAPS, BUT I AM SHOUTING AT YOU!!!!! Having been a type 2 diabetic for 20 years, I can tell you that if your body is producing ketones, you need to see a doctor immediately!! I won't attempt to make any diagnosis, but you can die from this stuff. Nothing to play around about. I think that most other diabetics, ( there are lots on this forum) WILL AGREE.

That acetone (nail polish remover) breath is also an indicator for strep infection. One of our kids was very prone to strep and that's how I learned to distinguish between it and the average sore throat.

I've tested for ketones and it's says I only have a trace of ketones in my blood. Someone with Diabetes told me the hospital doesn't treat small amounts of Ketones in the blood. They said just drink lots of water to flush it out of my system. So I'm doing that now.

Here is my last three month Blood test taken on 5/4/2009 I'm type 2 and have had diabete sence 2003.
A1c 12.3
Total Cholesterol 231
Triglyorides 194
HDL 55
Calculated LDL 137
Microalbumin 18
Other laoratory test were normal,
Urinalysis
Kidney Function
Liver Function
Potassium and other Minerals
Blood Protein
Calcium and other Bone Minerals.
Also I take two shots of insulin a day and each is 16 units of Novolog mix 70/30 flexpen.
