My DW uses it all the time to talk to her sister and mom back in Ohio. They like is because our kids can see them and they can see our kids.

Personnaly I do not use it nor like it but my DW likes it just as much as facebook so I just let her go and have fun with it.

I have it on my Asus EeePC but have never used it. I find it easier to just pick up my phone and use it.

I don't use WasteBook either.

We got Magic Jack last year in Texas and brought it home with us to Canada. Use it for all long distance calls in Canada and USA and find it works well. Have a Texas phone number on it so friends who live down there year round call call us on it without paying long distance to Canada rates.

Have found it having a 'choppy' conversation with some cel phones. Don't know if it depends on the cel carrier, location or what. Land lines are very dependable.

Also use it to send faxes anywhere in North America.

It's a program for using your internet connection to place phone calls. It is similar to an upload / download except it transmits / receives voice.

I believe both parties have to be using the program for it to work. I don't think it can be used for one way calls. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

skype can make calls to land lines as well this was what i used it for however my company now pays my phone bill and has provided me a long distance 'bounce' so i dont need skype any more

skype had a killer long distance plan but the line quality could be questionable at times... i think i paid like $10 for 3 months of unlimited calls in the US.

You can use Skype much the same as Vonage or any other phone over internet. When using computer to computer you have free calls and video calls anywhere in the world. You can also use skype "out" as a service to call Land line phones from your computer ( for a price .. generally 2cents a minute in the states or a "plan" of minutes) other cheap rates for international calls You can also purchase a phone that connects to your internet connection and becomes a "real" phone with Skype "in" which gives you a number and you can be called on that number. Mostly free and works well most of the time but did I mention its FREE ? so ....
Hope this helps ( looks like a lot of grumpy people still like that old land line and dont like all those new fangled things like communicating with family and friends in fun new ways )
