Last night when I took the 3 dogs outside I wore my "headlamp" (a little flashlight that you put on your head). The dogs were running around playing and I noticed that the 2 poodles eyes glowed red and orange, but Kabira's eyes glowed blue and green. I thought that was strange - why would they be different colors (i.e. red vs blue)?

Eyeshine is a phenomenom that has been studied, yet still not fully understood. Coloration of the reflected light can range from bright reds, blue to a green glow, and is part of the night hunter animals night vision system. Human eyes do not have the mirror like 'tapetum membrane', our eyes are designed to collect absorb and retain light. Which is why we are so bad at seeing at night..while our pets and other animals can "hunt" us in the dark easily!

An interesting sidelight is that animals with the brightest eyeshine generally have more rods and fewer cones in their retinas. As a result they have excellent night vision, but most are color-blind.

I've noticed that, too - that my dog's eyes glow with different color. My big Aussie has a "marble" eye (brown with a fleck of blue in it) and that eye glows twice as bright as the other one....

And Jimmy and Ike's glow red, while Jack's glow green.

In the winter where we live we almost always have a few deer standing a few hundred feet back in the woods when I let the dogs out into their big run area. It's fun to shine my light back into the woods and see all the little lights shining back at you. At first I was startled, but now it's fun to watch. We have a couple Cougar prowling the area we have heard, as half the neighbors have seen them, and I often wonder if those eyes have been one.

Both Harlee and Calvin’s eyes have a blue green refection (tint).

Male alligators' eyes glow red. Just in case you're ever in the Everglades after dark.

Reminds me when we first got to the Mainland. While visiting one of Ma’s church friends who lived by a lake.

After dinner, I was walking out of the front porch. I was asked, where I was going. I told them that I was going for a walk by the lake.

I was given a flash light and advised to stay in the main road and told to watch for snakes.

I elected to sit on the porch and visit instead…

My Texas Healers eyes glow yellow. Any time you take her picture you have to go back over it with a black felt tip pen other wise it looks wierd, red eye settings on the camera don't help either.
