Another one is if you leave say a six dollar tip, they might add a one in front of it making it sixteen bucks. Odds are people don't check their credit card statements at the end of the month of they glance at them and thing yes that sounded about right.
When I pay for a meal with a credit card, I pay the tip in cash and write "cash" on the line of the receipt that says "tip". Kind of hard for them to change "cash" to a dollar amount.

We ate at an Applebees and paid with a credit card. We left the tip on the table in cash. At the end of each week, I pay whatever I put on the credit card online. We pay almost everything with the credit card because we get points for various free gift cards and by paying each week never get an interest charge.
After eating at Applebees I did my usual checking and noticed the amount online was $10.00 more than my receipt. I called Applebees. They said there was a $10.00 tip on their copy. They were SURE it was an honest error. The waitress must have misunderstood our intentions. SURE!
