I can't get a straight answer on this. We have a new RV with component wiring (5 wires) run in the wall for all TVs. Our current RV Direct TV receiver is standard (3 wires). I do not want to upgrade to the HD receiver from Direct because of the extra cost per month. Can I use my old receiver and if so how will it be wired?

Sure.
The component wires in your RV are Red/Green/Blue (video) & White/Red (stereo audio).
The 3 composite wires on your non-HD equipment are Yellow (video) & Red/White (stereo audio).
Just connect your non-HD audio wires to the Red/White & run the Yellow through one of the component video wires -- just remember which one.

Thanks, makes sense. BUT, that means I will have to take all 3 TVs out and change wiring in the back. Is there any electronic "gismo" that will convert 3 wire to 5 wire, that would be much easier?
Thanks

No there isn't. Don't nickel and dime yourself. Get a new receiver.

Am I to understand that you have three flat panel, HD TV's and you want to intentionally downgrade the signal to standard def?
Its $11/mo for all three TV's to have HD. The receiver is free.
Have you ever seen HD? Its gorgeous.

Here's one converter. You can Google for more. Considering the prices I saw you would be better off to get a new receiver. If the TV's have composite input then you could use one of the component cables for the composite and you might have to move the audio cables depending upon the TV configuration.

Quote: We have a new RV with component wiring (5 wires) run in the wall for all TVs. How many TV's and what is the estimated length of the wiring to each?
Most receivers that I've seen have a single component or composite output. So how do you plan to connect to multiple TV's? There are RCA splitters and switch boxes of course.
I'm asking to learn because with longer cables and splitters there might be issues with signal quality.

OP, I understand your cost considerations as many of us are in that boat. But I will tell you this: If your TV's are HD and you have a batwing input you'll soon be comparing HD to SD and you'll begin to consider DirectTV HD.
However, the other major consideration is the sat antenna which is larger and has skew to consider for setup.
Our tradeoff: We use the SD DirecTV receiver and portable dish. I added the wingman for better batwing reception. The digital channels are much better than the older analog channels. We do not have HD in the rig.
At home we have a HD receiver and a SD DVR and HD TV. We love the recording capability but are getting spoiled by the HD quality. We're now considering replacing both receivers with a HD DVR.

If you're describing this correctly, you're saying that you have a single receiver connected by coax to your dish and you want to run 3 TV's off of it. If so, no matter how you connect them, they will all be displaying the channel that is selected on the receiver. In order to have 3 independent TVs, you need to have a receiver connected by coax to your dish for each TV.

Question? So thats why my non-HD TV won't function correctly when the "yellow video" wire is connected? If I get a new HD TV will this resolve this problem?
