You may want to contact geology department folks at colleges/universities in your area for info such as UC Berkeley, Cal State at Sacramento, etc. Don't know which places have geology professors in northern CA, but I'm sure that there must be some around. Might take some "digging" to find where to find.

There are lava flows west of Las Cruces, NM and other features as well such as Kilbourne Hole. In fact there are a couple of smaller holes as well in that area.

Kilbourne Hole

My first trip, soon after moving here about 38 yrs ago, was in a two wheel drive pickup. But the other times were in 4x4 jeeps or 4x4 Scout II or an enduro motorcycle. There are some neat lava flows out that way as well. The route I would take later on was cutting through one. Found it just exploring on my bike one day. One side of the hole has really high sand dunes along it, very neat with 4x4 or a bike. Got high centered once in a jeep on a low sand hill with plants on the top. No shovel, poor jack, took some hand digging to get loose. Not fun! Brings back memories. May have to give it a try on my XT250 sometime.

You should be able to get a map of the area with the lava flows marked from the BLM office in Las Cruces. At least it would be worthwhile to ask them. BLM Las Cruces

I think there is a lava field in Bend, OR or just north of it I think. If you do go to Bend, bring extra warmth, it gets mighty cold there in the winter months and be prepared for lots of snow so you might not see any rocks!

Thanks for your help, this forum is too cool.
We were at Crater Lake this spring, of course she wasn't looking for them then. I have a cousin in Bend Or. so I'll e-mail him for some information there. NM sounds like a good winter trip, we were thinking about going to Casa Granda Az. anyway.
Thanks again. ROAD TRIP !!!!!

There are LOTS of lava outcroppings in the Northwest and New Mexico but many of them are not pumace. MOST are basalt but there are some that also contain pumace. We saw some pumace near Mt St Helens but don't remember just where it was now. The had samples of pumace on display at the observatory on Johnsons Ridge.

There is a Quary on Hwy 20 just before Clear Lake that has red lava rock, and Teichert has a Quary in Truckee that has red lava rock. You could call local landscapers or rock yards (Hansens) and they may give you phone numbers.
