I have owned 4 airplanes
one flew around 80 mph piper cub,
one around 150 mph Smith sidewinder
others around 120 mph.
cub burned 5-6 gph,
sidewinder 9-10 gph
others 12 gph.
The twin I rented flew 200 mph and burned 24 gph.
But you are talking commercial airliners and yep they go fast but I can not get
GF on one.
I'll stay with an RV more fun but when you want to get somewhere fast fly.

No cruise ships or trains? Both do much, much better than planes. About a factor of 5 for trains and 50 for a ship. Planes are good for one thing, getting from one inconvenient place to another far away, quickly.

This doesn't include all the airport baloney.
I hope there's an interesting story in our future

I fly to DDs in RGV from DFW from time to time, when AA has good prices. We (DH & I) are flying down around first of Dec, due to $239 round trip for two! Since we aren't retired yet, it just makes better sense this time to fly...Can't drive it for that cost, plus time.

Yes but you cannot fly for just gas money.
And a plane takes you to an airport, not your destination.

Independent studies have shown that you get the best fuel mileage when traveling within the confines of your home

Fuel mileage might be better but cost to replace and daily maintenance on an airplane far out weight the little it saves in fuel per passenger. Look at how much fuel it takes to fill one up. That about enought fuel to last the average person years.

Cruise ships are usually about entertainment and not about getting from one place to another. Most of them start and end the trip at the same spot. There is also the need to travel to a coastal location (or one of the great lakes maybe) to board a cruise ship.
Granted, there are transatlantic cruise ships, but those are a very small part of all cruises.
Personally, I can't often afford to take my RV on a trip. I often fly or drive my car as it is less expensive.

Like Leonna Helmsley said: "Only the little people fly commercial"............ or something like that.
I don't care how much better mileage they get, I just don't like you people enough to want to stuff myself into an aluminum cigar with a couple hundred of you and breath the same air for hours.

I fly a lot, what a pain in the butt. If I had to drive to all my destinations I would never get any work done. Sometimes flying is faster and sometimes that's what you need to do. The drive getting to our destination is part of the trip and we enjoy the drive. I have found that if I can drive somewhere in 5 hours it's better to drive then fly. Driving I arrive on time 99% of the time. Flying I arrive late 99% of the time. The treatment received from the airlines has gotten worse and worse to the point it has become us against them battle. If I treated customers as bad as they do I wouldn't have any.
