Our home state is California, but we will be spending the majority of next summer out of state and will have two of our vehicles requiring smog inspections prior to license renewal. Can the inspection be done several months in advance of the renewal date? I have looked at the CA DMV and have found no reference to this type of problem.
I have found that I CAN pay the registration fees without the smog certificate, but I will not receive my new license tags without the smog certificate.
I am more than willing to get both vehicles smogged prior to our departure, but one of them will not be due for three months after departure.
Anybody run across this situation before?
thanks

It doesn't help for CA, but in Ohio, we can renew anything up to 3 months in advance. Give the DMV a call and ask.

The smog certificate is valid for 90 days, but DMV usually sends out the renewal notice 30 days in advance.
So say your renewal is due in July, you could get your smog check done in March and renew in June....

It's required in Placer County for renewal.

Required in Butte County also and has been for at least a dozen years.

Ok, thanks. 90 days "just" might do it.... I think we usually get our renewal notice with more than a 30 day advance; I think it is more like 60 days. With the combination of the two, I should be ok.
thanks again

Ron, You didn't say what you are doing about mail forewarding and bill paying so it is hard to give you a real answer but what I would do is have the vehicles smoged just before leaving and when the renewal notices come out put your check in the envelope and mail it in to DMV. The smog checks are as stated before, good for three months (90days) and the renewals usually come out more than a month in advance so you are pretty safe there. If the renewal is late just photo copy the registration and put a check for the amount from last year in an envelope and mail it in. I don't think that DMV makes any allowance for those of us that travel and talking to the clerks in an office is like talking to a brick wall. There is a chance that you could call DMV and wend you way to a person that can give you the correct answer but I would call at least three time and speak to three different people before I decide on a course of action they recommend. Let us know what you find out.

Thanks for the info.
We have a friend forward our mail about once a month and do most (except for one payment) via on-line.
RE: getting the vehicles smogged prior to leaving.... don't you have to have the registration renewal form for the guy doing the smog test so that he can enter the results in the DMV computer system? I was going to go down to our local smog test station and ask personally and see what they say. Going to DMV is usually a waste of time as you will get different answers from different clerks.... been there, done that!
thanks again
