We were told of a new toll highway from San Luis to Puerto Penasco. A group of us are leaving tomorrow (11/14) and were going via San Luis. We are heading to Kino Bay. Has anyone taken the new highway? What are the conditions of the old highway from PP to Caborca.
The current plan is to take the 2 from San Luis to Caborca then to Santa Ana and beyond. The 'flyer' about the highway says it cuts out 78 kms and an hour of travel.
Would appreciate your response today as we head out early in the morning.
Thanks!
Highway #2 from Lukeville/Sonoyta is a Beautiful "New" Toll Road that takes You through Caborca to join with Highway #15 at Santa Ana. I'm afraid that It has been many Years since we crossed at San Luis, however I'm pretty sure that that Road has also been upgraded in the last few Years!
We have taken the road from Lukeville and it is good... well there was still a little bit of construction on it last Spring but should be done now.
We are in Yuma, and were told that there is a new highway from San Luis to PP, but are concerned about the 'old' road from PP to Caborca.
We traveled the road from Puerto Penasco to San Luis just yesterday. The road from Puerto Penasco to El Golfo is just fine, not perfect, but great for our 40 foot motorhome with tow vehicle. We decided to try the new toll road from El Golfo to San Luis and that cost 188 pesos. The toll road is excellent and will save a lot of time. We did find some construction for about a block where the toll road joins highway 2 going west. We are not sure about heading south. We can just give you the north directions. But generally speaking the road is just fine.
In 2006 we took the road from Puerto Penasco to Caborca and that road was fine; it looks like their is a new cutoff for Caborca north of PP so you don't have to go through town. If my memory is correct, the coastal road from El Golfo will lead you right into the new cutoff road to Caborca (around a roundabout). Nice to miss the traffic of town. We cannot get into the mainland right now since our non-cancelled vehicle permit problem still has not been resolved. We sold our RV in the states with the permit still on; we removed it and are trying to go through all the right hoops to get it canceled. Have fun. We hope to go to the mainland next year.
Don't know about the road from Puerto Penasco. Highway 2 from San Luis to Sonoya is still under construction in some places, but passable. It will slow you down. That was on Oct 11. After Sonoyta, the road is fine to Santa Ana, though mostly one lane with the usual half lane on both sides.
