I REALLY want a "home" state. I am having problems with mail, the IRS, and local gov't as in DMV stuff. Can anyone guide me? Ok, I'll start by telling ya'll about us. My Hubby and I hated the weather and job status of most places we "moved" to. Moved meaning we bought a house and did the "normal" things. Hated that life. We have been in our 5th wheel for about a year and a half. LOVE IT. we have a son and he goes to "school" online. We can and go go everywhere. Here is the problem. When we move to a new state now, we have just gone to the post office and rented a box. No big deal. We had all of our "gov't" stuff pre-paid. Now we need to hurry and fine a "home state" because we need plates and drivers licenses and now the IRS wants to know "where" we are. We have been full-timing for about 3 years and spend almost 1 & 1/2 in Arizona. I need some guidance in what the states consider a "resident" and what states have "less" taxes. I say "less" but I am not trying to hide from them, I just want less of them in my business. Like, plates for the car shouldn't be $200 on my well loved but "crappy" minivan. You know the ones who charge taxes based on what they think your car is worth without looking at it. My Hubby is from Ohio and I hope that we don't ever have to go back that far east. I am hoping for something that we either never need to go to, or something west of say the Mississippi River. Does anyone have a state you like to call home and why? I don't want to buy property or visit that state very often. Any other ideas anyone has along these lines are also very welcome! Mailing, IRS, and DMV info is what it causing me the most problems. Thanks for looking at my problem. I can't wait to read all the replies.

Welcome to the forum.
Great first post.
I hope you find what you are looking for.
I would recommend Oregon, great vehicle license fees, no sales tax, but we have outrageous income taxes.

You may have some problems with the REAL ID Act that takes effect on Jan 1, 2010 I think its still to take effect then but they could have delayed it again.

I would look at http://www.escapees.com/. A lot of folks use Texas through that organization.

Texas, South Dakota, and Florida are the most used.

I couldn't agree more. Everything you need can be found on their web site.

WA has no income tax, fairly low property taxes, but has a sales/use tax on vehicles of around 9% + and a slaes/use tax on everything but food that runs around 8%. I don't know what the vehicle tax actually is as I haven't bought a vehicle for just over a year. Costs abpout $135/yr for the MH and less than $40 each for the cars. It's actually pretty cheap unless you plan on buying a new rig. Also, if you claim residence here and use an LLC expect to be watched closely as it's easy to get on the wrong side of the law here even if the LLC is set up by an attorney and completely legal in another state, it might not be here.

We paid $24 each to register the vehicles AND the motor home in Tennessee. Each county set their own rate, and some cities also add a local tax to the registration, but total usually less than $100. Driver's licenses were around $60 for the first year. House taxes were under $350 a yr, no income tax (although some dividend and interest income is taxed), sales tax between 7-9% depending on what county and gas is a lot cheaper here than we were paying in Maine (also about 70 inches less snow!). We do have a stick house here, however. Don't know how to work that in to full timing, although housing costs here are pretty cheap. Buy a hole in the wall and fix it up when you can't full time anymore!

Oregon outside of the Willamette valley offers reasonable insurance rates, no sales taxes, reasonable vehicle license fees and pretty good weather conditions for about 7 months of the year.

I am a "resident" of South Dakota, and besides very low taxes, they are very RV fultimer friendly. I use Alternative Resources in Sioux Falls. They have attorneys, banks, and insurance agents who understand teh full time life style. They are next door to the drivers license bureau and they understand fulltimung there as well. Give them a call, 800-477-2664, and tell them PMB 1293 referred you. I think they will answer all your questions and solve all your problems.
