I have a 1994 Fleetwood RV with 30 amp service and it still has the original converter in it. Other than the loud buzzing noise it works fine.

I have an onboard 4K generator as well as a small 600 watt gen and a new stand alone 3 stage battery charger for charging of the two 6 volt coach batteries while boondocking.

I have thought about upgrading to a more modern converter but get a little confused when shopping for one.

What are the advantages to upgrading the converter?
What are my options for replacing the old converter?
Tell me what to get and where to get it.
Thanks,
mtnman

Hi mtnman1989,

I'd go to Bestconverter.com they seem to be very honest.

The advantage would be that you could leave the stand alone battery charger at home.

I am already confused, they offer a 45 Amp and a 55 am Converter Replacement Kit and there is only a $2 difference in price. Why would I buy a 45 Amp when I can get a 55 amp for just $2 more?

The larger size will need larger wire between the converter and the DC distribution panel. You will need a larger fuse for the circuit into the DC distribution panel. You would need to check wire size between DC distirbution panel and batteries.
You didn't say which Fleetwood RV and which converter you have. That would help to get a more informed answer.

They have a 30 amp 9100 series Inteli-Power PD9130A for $137 and a charge wizard for an additional $25, Is this what I need?

The PD9130 plus the Charge Wizard would save some changes.

WOW!!, I dont want to have to re-wire my RV.
I just want to order it, take the old buzzer out and drop in the new unit.

Is this going to be better than my new three stage charger?

Our trailer has a 7355. Good converter, not much of a charger. I went the portable charger route instead of a newer style converter. I have a number of Vector portables for charging from the gen while camping off grid. Intend to keep doing this until/if the 7355 dies.

If it does, I will get a converter that charges the same way the Vectors do, which is multi-stage charging with constant amps in Stage 1. I will not get a WFCO or a PD, which are vastly inferior IMO.
The Xantrex or IOTA/Carmanah converters use the same charging method as the Vector, so that is where to go so far.

I have the notion that soon there will be more choice in the next generation of these things since the current PD 9200/9100 series is at least ten years old. Just guessing though.

Meanwhile, if it ain't broke, don't fix it?

Here is my two cents on trading out the converter. If you store your rig and keep it plugged into shore power, the new smart charging converters are the way to go.
I had an old conveter on the rig when I got it and it ruined my batteries when I left it plugged in. Replaced the conveter with a PD-9145 with Charge Wizard and got two good deep cycle batteries shortly after that. That was five years ago and the batteries are still great and I hardly ever have to add water.
