OK, Maybe it was a dumb question.... I'll load it up and dump it. That's what I like about this forum - humor mixed with practical answers.
Thank you.

I used to live in VERY cold places in the winter. I put SALT in the holding tanks to keep them from freezing. For your black tank, I'd use about a cup of salt diluted in some hot water then pour it into the tank. It should mix into the contents enough to keep them thawed. If you have doubts, DRIVE the30 miles. That is the best insurance you'll get.

The tank will not rupture from freezing if there is room for the frozen liquid to expand. I think I would just put in an extra bottle or two of chemicals, drive or pull it for a mile or two to get them mixed in, and let it be.

Drive the 30 miles, the tank will probably be ok but the pipe from the tank to the discharge will probably break.

skipnchar wrote: Dumping into a bucket is probably the worst idea I've heard on this thread. That would prevent the "flushing" action necessary to remove solids THEN leave solids in an otherwise empty tank to turn into something that would be VERY DIFFICULT to remove next spring. Do you have a sewer clean out that you could dump into? That would be one GOOD option but I'd still favor leaving it otherwise or take the drive.
How would draining in a bucket be any different than draining at an RV dump site?
I have a blue tank that I drain in at home and then dump into my RV septic system I built.
When you get through draining, fill with several gallons of water to flush the system and drain.
I always like to put in 10 gallons of water, add some dish washing detergent and then go on a short trip to slosh the water around and 'clean' the system, then drain. You will be surprised what comes out.
On another note, my first RV was a 5th wheel trailer that a couple had traded in October and I purchased in February. The first dump was of a dried mass of - well, you know. I eventually had to break the mass up to get everything out. The RV had only been used a few times by the previous owners and the reputable RV dealer failed to clean the tanks. The liquids all evaporated and left the solids. Not a good idea to leave anything in the tanks for long.
Another thing, be sure and fill the traps with RV antifreeze - that stuff evaporates also and tank gases and smell will come in your RV.

I dumped and flushed my tank for the winter since she likely isn't going to be in action this time around. I added several gallons of pink stuff to my holding tank (singular, I have a combined vs separate) when I was living in it during the winter to prevent the tank from fully solidifying so that I wasn't left with a cracked tank and a poopsicle.

Like a giant Popsicle, but made with rather unpleasant liquids and solids with your holding tank as the mold.
