My Suburban furnace was working fine and quietly. After running for two nights of sub 30 degree weather, it began screeching like a rusty gate in the wind.

If I remove the outside air wheel, the unit runs perfectly and quietly. I cleaned the wheel of dirt and put it back on both with and without the cover and the screeching returns, just not as loud.

The wheel looks fine, seems to be balanced (as best one can tell).

I will buy a new wheel on Monday, but I am not confident that will fix anything. What else should I be examing to rid myself of the noise?

Thanks for any ideas

I would guess that the bearings on that side are dry, so either try to lube the motor, or replace it.

So, when the wheel is mounted that is too much load on the bearings? That sounds possible. Unfortunately, they say the motor is sealed so my option would be to replace the motor. I guess the wheel is cheaper at $10.00 so I'll try that first then move to the motor for $130.

"Air Wheel" my term for the thing that spins on the motor shaft to move outside air around the furnace.

I too ask, what is an "air wheel"? are you asking about a blower of centrifugal fan wheel?

I agree with Chris, replace the motor. Some folks also replace the "air wheel" but you might not have to spend the money. VK

If the "air wheel" is not rubbing on anything and the center is still firmly affixed to the outside part then I would think it surely would be a motor bearing. I just hate it when things come from the factory as a bummer.

The big squirrel cage fan on my house furnace started raising heck and on that one the inside hub had came loose from the cage.

Just put some oil on the shaft next to the motor. Some where someone said they drilled a small hole in the motor at the bearing to oil it. If nothing is loose in/on the fan wheel replacing it would be like changing a light bulb when the breaker was tripped.

Ok, I will try the lube the motor thing since some have had success, it is free, and the parts store is closed.

BTW, on my parts list Item 350110 is "Wheel, Combustion Air" so I created the term Air Wheel
