We're headed to Palm Springs/Desert Hot Springs area in a couple of weeks to see friends. We would rather boon dock than stay in a park. Any suggestions where we can stay and be legal? We don't need a hassle over being on private land or in an unsafe area either.
Thanks for any suggestions.

I added the place called Painted Canyon, it is about 30 miles south and east of Palm Springs, I know you want to be much closer. Painted Canyon is a place my dad used to take us as kids back in the 60's to drive dune buggys and motorcycles, and you can camp legal for free. There should be several closer places, perhaps along 111 and west of the Salton Sea.
There is also some hot springs in the area, with natural hot water coming out of the ground.

Depends on what you are looking for. There's the Spotlight 29 casino at exit 146 in Coachella, CA. They don't have a hotel yet so there is plenty of RV parking and I've seen several TTs and 5ers parked there unhooked. (I have not stayed there myself.)
There is plenty of BLM land east of Coachella and south of Joshua Tree NP. There are dispersed sites off Cottonwood Rd., just outside of JTNP, and on the road to Mecca (starring Bob Hope and Bing Crosby).
There is also BLM dispersed camping available behind the Gen. Patton Museum at Chiriaco Summit.

Thanks. We're going to be in South Palm Springs. I'll have to check the map. The second half of the trip we'll be near Desert Hot Springs/Sky Valley, so it will be worth it to move the trailer to that side of the freeway.

In that area, the Morongo Casino in Cabazon, west of DHS is also very RV friendly and has a huge lot.
Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio allows you to stay up to 3 days for free in their huge rv & truck parking lot. The trucks park on one side and the rv's are on the other side. It's well lit and patrolled by security. We've stayed there.

Hey Arizona 5ers,
I know of no place within 20 miles of Palm Springs you can boondock. If your friends house has space to park you could probably stay there as Palm Springs right now has few regs on RV's. Although South Palm Springs is not really an RV area. Otherwise it's a casino or RV park. BLM land is 40+ miles from Palm Springs.
