Topic: V10 oil burner?

Posted By: mblaster on 04/04/10 11:32am

I consider myself a bit fanatical whan it comes to oil and filter changes. I change frequently say every 3 months or so and maybe 2-3 K at most. I use Mobil 1. I'm always towing and the rig pulls like a champ. I've got 35k on the odo without a hitch and there are no leaks. Heres the thing. I add 6 quarts and drain 5 every time....interesting.
Anyone else burn some oil?

Is 1qt going into the filter? The filter doesn't drain when you drain the oil. If you're replacing the filter during oil change, then one qt will go to the filter (assuming it's a 1qt filter).

That sounds correct to me! Fill with 6, drain out 5, the rest is in the filter and engine. Not every drop drains out.

It does sound a bit odd, I wouldn't think the filter holds more than a couple of cups. After I take my filter off, same engine as you, I hold the filter and drain it into the pan.

You would think that once the initial oil is in the nooks and crannies inside the engine, if that stays there, then it is always there, and it doesn't need replacing.

Anyway, you have piqued my interest now. Does the dipstick start and end at the same place before and after the change? It is normal to use some in 3000 miles, and some doesn't come out of the filter... (weigh it to see how much is left).

If you're using 1 quart between oil changes, I would hardly call that an oil burner. Do you ever check the oil in between changes? Is it low?

ck it before changing i bet your full last quart is in the filter and motor like others have said

Had a 2002 Mirada 340MBS with V-10 for about 35,000 miles and never had an oil consumption problem and do not remember adding oil between the changes every 5,000 miles. Plz 4giv anee mrs-spellins.

I agree with this too. The level on my dipstick never moves but I have not really measured how much I have when drained.

Check your owners manual. It will advise oil capacity with and without an oil filter. I seem to remember oil consumption of 1 quart every 1000 miles is acceptable.

Only real way to test this would be to change the oil, drive around the block and change it again. See what you measure the second time.

A quart over 3,000 miles is about normal as far as I'm concerned. Used to have a 70 Olds Cutlass with a 350 that burned a quart every 1,000 miles.

GM said that was allowable and within their specs.

The filter on the V10 is not exactly small, I am sitting here looking at a Motorcraft one for an upcoming oil change. Whenever I change the oil, the filter is full to the brim with oil. It would not hold a whole quart, but maybe half of one.

Am I the only person who has never measured how much oil came out of my engine when I drained it?

Posted By: 4gone on 04/04/10 05:37pm

I never take out exactly what I put in on any vehicle. Ther is always some in the filter, even if you empty it, compare it to the new one and it's always heavier, some stays in the engine, clings to the drain pan, in my case runs down, hits the front I-beam and gets wiped with a rag. If it reads good on the dipstick before you change it and doesn't read a quart low, I wouldn't (and don't) worry about it.

My 99 V10 has 70k miles and uses about a quart of oil every 3k miles according to the dipstick.I rarely add any oil as I usually change the oil every 3k miles.

Even a quart in 1000-1500 miles wouldn't be excessive in something that only gets 6-7 mpg.

Forget about it.

2000 35U suncruiser with 76,000 miles on the V10. Run mobil 1 and it will burn about a 1/2 to 1 quart between oil changes. I tow the jeep everywhere we go and I do not baby the V10 and never a issue. So it sounds about right to me.

I'll be about 1/2 quart low in 5,000 miles at 61,000 on the odometer. Drained won't quite fill the 5 qt. container & the rest is in the filter.

Nope. I've never measured mine. Measured the Xmission fluid so I'd know how much to put back in, but never the engine oil.

Hi,

I found that my 1975 F-350 truck 460" engine would use about a quart of oil every 1,000 miles or so, and I always considered that good, because some oil is burned while lubricating the piston rings. But I went on a 5,000 miles trip with my Bounder motorhome with 97 F-53 and 460" engine and only used up about 1/2 quart. I never even checked the level until I got home.

I had never used more than a tiny amount of oil between yearly oil changes at about 4,500 - 5,500 miles.

My FOrd Edge is about 1/4 quart low after 1 year and 5,500 miles on the engine. Yes I need to change the oil soon. My 1967 VW based dune buggy, with 1600 cc engine is another story, I think it uses a quart every week or two. We have come a long way since air cooled engines.

Good Luck,

Fred.

i measure the oil in,,but never out...i keep watch on the dip stick during intervals...I had a 99 model V10--it burned about a quart between changes...I used Mobil 1 and use it for 5k miles....it was a good engine...better (IMOP) than this 8.1 we have now

Start the engined up after the change and let it run for a bit, shut it down, and let it set for a bit (long enough for oil to get back into the pan). What does your dip stick say?

Yup. But I use Amsoil 5W-30 (my son is a dealer). At 68,000+ miles the "oil consumption" has gone down to 1 qt per 5,000 miles. Still have the same motor home.
