I'm pulling a 38 ft 5er and looking at cutoff from I-5 to CA 79 then CA 371 next to CA 74 (Pines to Palms Hwy) to the Springs. Going east from there.
So tell me am I nuts or is this a cool drive for one who is not afraid of most roads. Been fulltime for 6 years but not in this area. So time to ask.

Or otherwise will just take CA 79 all the way up to I-40 from I-5 and be done with it.

Fast route: 15 to 215 to 60 to 10 to 111

Scenic route 1: 8 east to sunrise highway (S1) at Pine Valley.
S1 ends at 79. Right on 79 up through Julian, Santa Ysabel, and Warner Springs to a right onto 371 at Aguanga. Continue through Anza to a "T" intersection. Then two choices:

Right on 74 to drop down into Palm Desert (long & steep) which is just south of Palm Springs. OR --

Left on 74 up to a right on 243 which takes you thought Idyllwild to then drop down (long & steep) onto Interstate 10 at Banning. Right on 10 over to 111 down to Palm Springs.

Your scenic route: North on 15 to 79 right at south end of Temecula. Down to Aguanga and take left on 371 through Anza. (Merges with two route 74 choices above).

North of Julian the road has a lot of curves for the first 10 miles over to Santa Ysabel.

Route 74 down into Palm Desert is steep with lots of curves.

Route 243 from Idyllwild down to 10 at Banning is very steep and long.

Think about these grades when you make your choice.

Hey Guys, you would be mighty brave taking hwy 74 to Palm Desert. That is a steep twisty drop. I would be a little nervous doing that in the motorhome. I'm not sure how the brakes work in the 5th wheel but they will be SMOKIN! [emoticon])

Wish we were in Palm Springs to catch up... remember, I stopped by in the 'Q' to say hi? I was with the TOW group and we all had a great time.

Have a safe trip. We're in Tennessee for another week then heading back to Palm Springs.

MM.

I do it with a 31 foot travel trailer and a long bed Quad cab CTD. No problem and no smoking brakes! Just take your time and enjoy the view.
