We will be gone for approximately 2 wks. We will be driving a 35 ft Class C motorhome and towing a Jeep Wrangler. We would like to get to SD asap, as we have already been to CO and New Mexico several times. We would probably drive about 300-400 miles a day, so what is a midpoint to stay after leaving TX? And, does anyone have a good route and some great suggestions for rv parks? It would be great not to take a toad.
Thanks, Lila

Hi,

Once you leave Mt. Rushmore, turn right. Go about 1/4 mile, and there is a tiny parking lot with a place to get a side shot of Washington.

Also along highway 16, there are 4 tunnels that point directly at the monument, from across the valley. It is great to get a shot of the monument, with the tunnel in the background. Kinda like taking a picture of the tunnel, and look what is in the middle, a National Monument! Great side trip for the Jeep.

I also stayed at Custer State Park. Left the RV there, and took my Honda CRV to the monument. Also went to the drive with the wildlife, got to see some moose, buffalo, and other animals.

Good Luck,

Fred.

The Black Hills is one place where you are going to need a toad or at least a rental car. Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road are simply not wide enough or high enough to allow an RV. See Here.

Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.

Take 83 north to I-80, go west to 385, then north again to the Black Hills.
Not sure which way to tell you to get to 83.
Over to Austin, up through Lampasas to Brownwood, then over to Abilene and north on 83 from there.
There's a nice county rv park at Canadian TX just before you cross the bridge...off to your right.
Cabela's at Sidney has a nice rv park..or free parking in the truck lot.
Chadron, NE has a walmart if you want to stock up on last minute stuff.
