Why does Firefox 3.6.8 open advertising tabs by itself ? http://newsdaily7.com/income/index2.html This site and others open by themselves. I have run Malwarebytes and Superantispy. Nothing. Does not happen with Chrome or IE.

Moderator's edit: The above URL appears to be a scam site. Read about it here.

Hmm, I just tried to open this site in FireFox, but before it opened I got a warning screen from web of trust telling me that this site is rated "very poor" for trustworthiness, vendor reliability, privacy, child safety, etc. -- so I did not go ahead and open it.

It appears to be a work from home scam site.

I would advise all members to avoid this site.

If you are talking about at startup, check Tools/Options/General and see how many URL's you have for your home page. You can have 1 to many. They may be concatenated together with a vertical bar (I think) as a divider. That signifies a new tab for each URL.

It can look like this. You can see each time a http:// starts, there is a "|" separater. Just edit to what you want and click OK at the bottom.

Can you be a little more specific.

This happens while general surfing and when you click a lilnk, it may open 2 or more tabs (first being the link you clicked, second some ads such as Netflix, something similar to match.com, etc)?

If you try to specifically duplicate the actions, you cant. It might only happen on any specific link 1 in ten times (clicking) or only after shutdown and clearing cache/cookies/history? The explanation for this is they set values in cookie files and when you delete their counter is reset to 0 so they think you havent been to this site before - it will happen. After you close that tab, it may be 8-10 times before they will do this again.

Id bet - clearing cache/history/cookies will make this happen every time (if you want to prove it to yourself).

I dont like to reply with add-ons, but sometimes they are very effective. You might consider this.
Go to the link
Add to Firefox
After conpletion, restart your browser

Configuration
"Easy list" (likely all you need) will be pre selected for you
At the bottom of the page - accept it
Restart your browser

If you need to disable/enable, you can put a button on the toolbar - disable - refresh the page and you can see ads. Enable it and ads are gone.

Then sometimes when you try to close it another block opens up. That is why I assumed it was some type of scam ware. But why only in Firefox and how do get rid of it. It will also open some type of info or google looking site after you visit a site. This just started happening since Firefox updated.

I only have one home page. The extra tab does not open immediately or every time Firefox opens.

az99,

Did you clean up cache/history/cookies, then restart your browser? Might make a difference.

On Edit: Just to verify:
If you open the addon manager (Tools/Addons/Extensions)
In adblock Plus - click preferences
The first entry should be "Easylist" (English)
Check to verify it is enabled
Click OK
Restart your browser

I do use Adblock Plus. Here is another addon I use. Again, not tothink every solution is an addon, however...

Thanx wittmeba I will try that. Your description of my problem is spot on. It is so erratic how it happens that I had a hard time describing it.

Update- Same thing still happening. I was reading an article on CNBC. My hand was not even near the mouse. Another tab opened up to google.com/webhp.

I had the same problem. I downloaded and ran Ad-Aware I was running a good anti virus program but it didn't catch the culprit. I was also advised to get the free Fire Fox add ons Ad Block Plus and Better Privacy so I did and they both work well.
