Is gateguarding something you can do solo, or do you need to be a couple to get on. Just curious if I could do it for awhile as my wife travels elsewhere to see some of her family in Tx.

Most companies hire singles, but it is not common. Yes, you can do the job as a single on some gates, but shopping and doing laundry would be something that would need to be addressed. Our company will, if necessary, have one of their service employees relieve you for a couple hours when needed, to do your shopping or laundry. PM me if you need more questions answered.

I called Gate Guard Services and was told right away they only wanted couples. He was nice about it, but said 2 people were needed. I've been told KC Services has gates for singles, but they never answered phone and I got no response to voice mail.

I was concerned about getting groceries but came up with an idea. I've read a number of times that there are companies who've developed freeze dried meals for backpackers, like Mountain House, that are supposed to be pretty good. By buying them in bulk I could have enough food to get by. There are also manual washing machines, kind of like a big bucket, that do a decent job. Since water is provided one could manage.

Mrs.Fitz here. This may sound like a silly question but what is the job discription for Gate Guard. This is something my husband wants us to try. Thanks for the info

Well, normally both of you have to be "onboard" because most spots require it. You need some kind of an RV-you have to be mobil. You will be working around oil rigs (and all that that entails) checking vehicles in and out. Companies advertise and tell you that you will work 24 hours a day. That does happen, but not all the time and you're not busy all the time. One of you will have to be on site at all times. It is hot, dusty and can be boring. Finally, most of the se companies are based in Texas. You need to pass the test and be licensed by the Private Security Bureau. It pays well and is the best job I have had in an RV.

Just curious, do most facilities have a gate shack or gaurdhouse for the gaurd on duty or are you in and out of your RV everytime a vehicle pulls up requesting entry?

Your rv is the "guard shack".You go in & out as needed unless you set up a chair outside.

Your presence is needed on the gate-otherwise they wouldn't have hired you. There will be times when this doesn't apply, of course. We have an awning out plus a EZ Up, a small table and a couple of camp chairs. Our RV is the security check point.

................It is easy to wear out a set of steps on any Rv when a couple hundred vehicles come thru your gate every 24 hours . I believe setting up some kind of small tent enclosure outside your RV would be the best answer rather than using your steps . , jf

Never in all the years we've been doing this, have we had a "couple hundred" vehicles come through the gate in 24 hours, maybe 50 on a busy day, 25-30 is normal. Now if I was working a multi pad gate then you might see that many, but again, very doubtful.

At one of our previous gates, we had 3 rigs drilling, 3 existing producing wells, 2 pads being built and pipeline workers using our gate. Needless to say, WE WERE VERY BUSY. We were so ready to get finished there!! That sure was not the usual gate.
