This is the story you are referring too. It is nothing but a story, it has been researched ad naseum by members on that board and not one shred of actual evidence that this case actually exists has ever been found. It is just a tall tale created by a badge carrying member of the weight police in a pathetic attempt to scare someone. The only FACT is there are no documented cases of anything like this actually happening. Anywhere, ever. I would love to see one but it just doesn't exist. How can that be when the Internet experts claim if you are a lb over your weight ratings ( that have no legal bearings) You are going to kill someone, be sued for negligence and your insurance will drop you. ???

Im not saying that if you go one lb out you will kill someone. I know that people can and will sue over stupid things. Each person has to decide what their truck will pull and what they as a driver can handle. I am not trying to be an internet expert. I have towed with trucks that are at there limit or over it. it is not a fun experiance. Sorry i opened this can of worms.

My toy hauler has a gvw of 18000 pounds most times its loaded to 16500 pounds for just the 5th wheel. So I got myself a good size truck to haul it with.

2003 International 8500 with HT530 diesel and 10 speed standard, 2006 38' Coachman Adrenaline fifth wheel toy hauler, 2000 Suzuki Hayabusa GSX1300R, 2008 Suzuki B-King, 2008 Suzuki Bandit 1250S
Take it to the limit!

This is a nice way to haul your toys! I don't worry about pulling hills or brakes to stop.

I have a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 with a Hemi. I tow a 18ft Baja toyhauler. Its not the greatest combo in the world but it works. 2 seasons towing to Ocotillo Wells and no problems, no close calls. If I were to get a bigger trailer, however, I would upgrade the truck.

Heck, you live close. PM me and you can come over and take the trailer for a test tow. See if it something your son would feel comfortable with.

My 22 footer weighs 6350 (Cat scale) empty and guessing 8K - 8.5K loaded. Used to tow with a F250 diesel but now tow with a F150. It tows it just fine with no issues. The world won't stop spinning if you tow a smaller trailer with a 1/2 ton .. trust me.

I find more arguments on this forum about what is an appropriate tow vehicle.....
I tow a Grey Wolf 21RR with a scaled weight of 7769 lbs loaded with a 09 Expedition rated for max of 9200 lbs. The tv isnt crazy about significant grades but I have never felt as though it wasnt going to make it on our tour through the Smokies last year.
And, I still have a vehicle that I can use for hauling people around with a moderate amount of comfort.

Stay within the trucks tow rating / limits and you will be just fine. I'd recommend a Reese dual cam hp system with 1200 lbs trunion bars. Its a great setup.

I have over 40K towing miles on my 07 Toyota Tundra. The rig towed is a 21' Ragen FK2100 Toyhauler. Dry weight is 5900lbs. Packed for camping trips with full water and other gear is about 7300lbs. For dune trips with a quad and a rhino its about 8800-9000 lbs.

The truck handles the load without any issues. The rig is stable, has excellent brakes, has plenty of power, and mileage is what you'd expect from a gasser at about 8mpg.
