We are heading up I35 and will get to Des Mones around 9/9:30. Is there a safe camp ground near there? We don't need full hookup but would like a clean CG. And NO we don't stay at WM.

Thanks and happy camping

You might go to www.rvparkreviews.com and do a Search for campgrounds within 25 miles of Des Moines. You'll get a page full of listings. Some are very good.. other are not so fine. Look at the Prairie Flower camg ground - it is an Army Crops of Engineers project - and I like it a lot.

The State Fairgrounds. Over 1,000 sites, full hookups!! REAL CHEAP TOO!
The only time they are 'full up' is during the State Fair.

I stayed there in the off season. It was just me and 4 other RV's. I only planned to stay the night and it was so peaceful I stayed a week!

Be sure to park up on the hill, the view of the gold dome on the capital building is great.

Take 80 west from West Des Moines just a few miles to the Waukee exit. Follow signs to Timberline CG, a very nice affordable CG with nice owners. Either that or Adventureland CG may be open, you would have to call to verify. That is 80 east to Altoona (DSM suburb).

You might check out the campground at the Osceola exit about 35-40 miles south of Des Moines on I-35. It is at the Terrible's Casino. It is a nice, convenient location and would allow you to camp a little earlier.

Many sites at the COE on Saylorville Lake. Adventureland RV park is fine. Timberline in Waukee is great. Jester Park outside of Granger.

We live near Terribles. It is right off of I35. The COE parks at Saylorville are nice, however, it was announced that the Corp is going to raise the lake level 12 feet next week. This might close some camping areas. Another possiblility is the Winterset City Park. Take the I35 Hwy. 92 exit at Bevington. It is probably a half an hour off I35.

Thanks all, we looked at the Terrible CG off I35. We will be coming in late. My wife called and they said no reservations, but if the CG was full, we could stay in the parking lot. If they are not full, it's only 20 bucks.
Again Thanks

If the parking lot with no hookups for 20 bucks is their option, go to the casino east of town and park at no cost.
