We are traveling that way this summer but we will travel west on IH 40 West of Amarillo and take Highway 385 north and hope to bypass the construction (Read that hint here on the forum)

I think GizmosMom refers to the route of US 385 to get you to US 87 at Hartley to I-25 in Raton.
