The reason I could not depend on solar is that we get very little sun up here in the Pacific NW. You probably think I exaggerate but, where we live, we have had only three sunny days in the past two months. It's raining today and is expected to rain all week. In fact, this weather system is expected to be with us at least through July . I'll probably just keep the rig I've got but have always looked with some interest at the 4X4 RVs. I can understand why they would not put an absorption refrigerator is a vehicle that is meant to go off-road, as you'd have to level it.

Ouch, well that puts a damper on things. I live in Denver and we get lots of sunshine, I always assume its the same everywhere else. I might lean back towards an absorption fridge in that case. I've noticed that people have better luck with bigger absorption fridges; I have the little one that is in a lot of pop up trailers. There seems to be a lot of people that have problems with them getting too warm.

But that's a thermoelectric model isn't it?

Nova kool now only makes compressor models, AFAIK. Perhaps they used to offer cheap thermoelectric chests.

I would only put a compressor fridge in an RV that has solar, or is normally plugged in.

Or if you drive a lot. Or stay in campgrounds with electricity. I don't know your area well, but just started keep my RV in Vancouver, WA. I've had no problem with my big nova kool electricity in March/April (and you know what it's been like).
I am curious long term if my unisolar panels work better than conventional panels in NW weather.

Hi mockturtle,

It sounds to me as if you need Uni-Solar panels where you live.

On my last trip during a snow storm I was gathering over 100 watts from 256 watts of panels. I regularly get 50 watts during heavy rain.

They've been selling models with the Danfoss compressor for a long, LONG time.

Thin insulation is the weak point - These fridges built to be as compact as a conventional mini-fridge - which means that the walls aren't nearly as thick as, say, your typical Sun Frost. That weakness can be partially remedied by adding several inches of your own Styrofoam insulation - IF you've got room for it.

.... My interest stems from the fact that both the Tiger CX and the Sportsmobile come with the compressor fridge (although the SMB offers the absorption type as an option).

I suspect that the Tiger can still be ordered with the 3-way reefer, tho' I haven't confirmed this with the factory. Also, it's had 2 house batteries (6V IIRC) as standard since about 2008 or so, and has an Onan 2800 (2500LP for diesels) unless it's ordered 'generator delete'. I think they also added a small solar panel (80W?) as standard with the compressor reefer. They'll pretty much build one however the customer wants it.

BTW, their web site doesn't do anything like justice to the recent model changes and options that they offer now. There's still the CX, but there's also the Bengal (taller roof with more headroom). The exterior back wall has been redesigned with the spare tire off set and vertical tail-lights to make room for a new bumper-mount storage box that doesn't increase the overall length. I saw all this on a brief factory visit in February on the way to a shuttle launch.
