It is very frustrating for us Canadians when fueling at service stations while in the USA, as most ask for a zip code. We do not have Zip codes in Canada, but I remember someone telling me to use a certain code at the service stations but misplaced this number. Can anyone help here, Thanks

I think they use the zipcode to check the billing address for the credit cards. You can probably get around this by charging a preset amount with the gas station attendant (like they do w/ cash purchases). If you really want a us zipcode go to usps.com and do a zipcode search. You can search by city so just pick one and enter it, or use the campgrounds address that you are headed to for your search.

Enter zip code 94974. If anyone is monitoring the numbers entered, I'm sure they will do a double take. However.....
''It is a geographical kind of thing, in a direct response to areas where there has been a high incidence of credit card fraud," said Betsy Eaton, spokeswoman for ExxonMobil Corp."
I suspect there has been a significant amount of credit card fraud in zip code 94974! :-)

I always give them the wrong zip code on purpose. Some stations also want a phone number....I also give them a fake phone number.

I thought it was to help prevent fraud if someone finds your card. I can tell you for a fact that my mastercard and Amex will deny at the pump if the zip is wrong. At that point I have to go pay the attendant using the same card that I just failed with at the pump
So if you actually have to provide a zip then you are probably stuck with visiting the attendant.

We are from Canada and when asked for a ZIP, we use the numbers from our postal code and add two zeros at the end. eg. if our postal code was P0B1J0, we would use 01000 for a zip. We have found this works most times. Good luck!

You can go inside and pay.....
The local Shell will reject an incorrect ZIP code. They must tie it to the Credit Card for security reasons. They won't get paid if the card is fraudulently used.
