My planned route will take me through Nashville, TN using I-24 Northbound (leaving from Manchester, TN early morning. I guess that will put me through downtown Nashville during the morning rush hour, on a weekday. How bad is the usual drive around 8 am. Are there any good alternatives around it from Manchester, on my way to Paducah, KY ?

Actually I24 thru Nashville is not all that bad even during rush hour unless there is an accident, of course. Just stay in the second from left lane and watch the signs.

I drove to Nashville from Murfreesboro for 26 years, and I-24 between about 6:30 and 8:00 is horrible. I used to leave for work at 5:15 just to avoid the mess, so that I got down town by 6 AM.
I would recommend that you plan your departure so that you are getting to the south side of Nashville at about 8:30 and it should not be too bad.

You need to be through Nashville before 7 AM, earlier if possible. That route inbound to Nashville from the southeast, between Murfreesboro and Nashville, gets UGLY in the mornings. It is 4 lanes inbound solid bumper to bumper from about 7 AM to 8:30 or so, gradually tapering off.
I would leave from Manchester no later than 5 AM. Or wait and leave from Manchester around 7:30 or later.
Your only real alternative is to pick up SR 840 and go northeast to I-40, then Briley Parkway around the north side of Nashville to I-24. But that is longer miles, only slightly better traffic.

After I-40/I-65 issues due to accidents I just take 155 from I-24 back to I-24.
The distance to take 155 (Briley Parkway) from I-24 to I-24 is just a few miles more. Nashville is a good place for us to top off our tank. The short distance between south part of 155 ( I-24 to I-40) is not limited access parkway so it is a fast place to pull off of fuel and a bite of food without using an exit ramp. It takes you by BASS PRO SHOP, Camping World and KOA for those interested.
We fly in and out of Nashville and just got burned by too much lost time going the interstates through Nashville due to accidend and there is not any issues getting into the correct lane when on 155 in my experience.
You just get off I-24 on to 155 (Bridley PW) and stay on it until you get back to the I-24 ramp on the other end.
I would/do take 155 at 2am on Sunday morning.

They forgot to tell you, that you are almost downtown when you get to the 155 Briley bypass. Or about a mile short of joining with I-40. No real advantage to use this route, as it will not avoid I-24 MESS from the south east. The 840 route will take you to Lebanon, then you have to go about 20 miles west on I-40 in heavy traffic before you get to Briley.
Like Coolmom said and I have experienced, you need to leave Manchester at 5AM to get ahead of the traffic, or after 7 AM to hit Nashville after it starts to clear. If there is a bad accident, all bets are off.

I would adjust your schedule and get north of there before you stop for the night or do as previously mentioned by others. You need to pay close attention going through to stay in the proper lanes. Good Luck!

What Briley Parkway does do is take you around the 4 interchanges in downtown Nashville. I-24/I-440 isn't any big deal, but the I-24/I-40 makes you go to the left lanes for I-40 west. Then you have to be in the right lanes for I-65 north to cross the river. This is the worst, as you have to get over in less than 2 miles. I-24 west from I-65 north will also be a left exit. but this is much easier in the AM as most traffic is going south.
