I have heard that if you put firewood in the bed of truck while towing a fver there is a chance the firewood could fly out is this true.

I usually carry several totes full of fire wood right behind the cab with no problems. Of course it is covered by my Fold A Cover.

I had an empty 5 gallon fuel jug wedged between the tailgate and toolbox. Stopped at a rest area on the Thruway and it was gone. No one took it so it must have taken an unwanted exit before I could fill it. Of course it was the better jug that went. So now if i carry firewood, I strap it together for peace of mind. Takes a min or two.

Never had a problem with firewood. Chocks, empty cooler, and empty rubbermaids, yes they may take flight.

It sure can! With our 97 F-250 and the 98 Sportsmaster fifth wheel it would lift up, dance around and depart the vehicle. Usually when going into the wind. Stopped carrying wood there real quick. With our current rig it doesn't happen. Must have been just something about our old rig that created a hell of a vacuum back there.

I have a slotted 5th wheel tailgate with some louvers and traveling at 60 mph into a headwind, small objects like 1x6 blocking have been sucked out over the slot. I was amazed to find they did not damage the lower front of the fiver. This may not happen with a regular tailgate.
If carrying stuff between the hitch and the tailgate, it might be a good idea to strap it down.

I pile the wood next to the cab of the truck and put a ratcheting strap across it; never had a problem.

I'm not positive but I'm pretty sure someone didn't take my firewood out.
Could be the reason both axles where bent, all the tires had blow outs, the brake wires were all broken and had holes in all 4 tanks
Just kidding of course but I learned years ago that firewood can fly out. The flow thru gate seemed to help, but I have learned to keep the wood between the hitch and cab with a tie down over it.
