Are you sure the leak is on the top of the tank?
I had a gas leak on my 1995 E350 every time I filled up with gas.I had to fill up very slowly to avoid a large gas leak. That was in Oregon where you can not fill up your self. After I made it home to Los Angeles
I found the leak coming from the rubber filling hose that connects the gas tank with the out side filler tube. The hose has a bend on the top
thats where the crack was.The Ford Dealer ordered me that special hose.
The prices was @ $50 Dollars.Ford part number F3VZ9047G

Is tank leaking, or is it the fill and/or air relief hoses? If the hoses are leaking they could be deteriorated due to age, or even clamps could be bad. I would start by checking there.

Is this a new problem?

Sounds to me as though you have an obstruction in your filler pathway to the tank. I would try shoving a small flexible rod down there.

I had a similar issue on a 92' model F53 chassis motorhome and it was the fuel filler hose leaking right at the neck of the tank. The hose can be replaced without dropping the tank.

I'm guessing, hoping it's the rubber hose filler tube near the top of the tank. I will crawl underneath tomorrow with a light and mirror to see what I can see. I cannot see any way to access it without lowering the tank or taking a sawsall to the floor. Bad idea!!
Anyone know if the self sealing plumbing tape like they sell at Lowe's will work with gasoline?

Just went through this on the Jayco. I used ordinary 1-1/2" gasoline filler hose from NAPA. If you need some quick and automotive doesn't have it, marine hose isn't much more expensive and places like West Marine are likely to have it. I was able to change the hoses without dropping the tank.

I had to drop a tank on a car I had. Disconnected hose at a filter near the engine, ran a hose to a clean drum. Found the fuel pump relay under the hood and wedged it closed to run the pump. I had less than 10 gallons in the tank. Made repairs and put it back in. NO SMOKING.

My 1984 Toyota Cressida actually had a drain plug on the bottom of the gas tank. It came in real handy when I drained old gas from the tank to put in fresh gas before selling the car.

I had the fuel filler hose fail on my toad ('06 Chevy Cobalt Coupe) recently. My Chevy dealer had a hard time finding the same diameter hose because it HAD to be gasoline rated. So I'm not sure that plumbing tape would do the job.
