Thanks to everyone that posted to me question about my Escape transmission. What valuable information. I will be using it to see if I can get Ford to change its stand regarding all of the transmission issues. Maybe with the help of REMCO I can tow the car. Marilyn

My Ford Escape is automatic and 2WD. FOrd states in the owners manual that the car can be towed 4 on the ground that's why I bought the car. But OH NO! It's been a learning experience to say the least. One good thing the RV has been great with no problems. I sure wish I had my Suzuki back. Marilyn

Still watching this post for updates and sharing my experiences to help others. Had a long talk with a local Ford service manager and he's taking a long hard look at my situation and contacting the factory.

He told me that another 2010 Escape being towed from FLA to Nova Scotia was brought to his shop with a fried transmission. In working with Ford's customer service to get that one fixed, someone at Ford mentioned a "baffle change" that would be in the new transmission. I'm wondering if this lines up with the February 2010 design change.

When I overheated in NC earlier this year, a service manager there ALSO mentioned a baffle change. However, when I called the Ford customer service line, they said there had been no such change. Puzzling that I'm hearing about a baffle change from two different Ford dealers but some at Ford don't know about it.

I'm still waiting to see if my transmission was built before or after the retrofit date. I bought it from a lot in April 2010 so it could go either way.

I sure wish I had known all this in 2009. We bought a 2010 Escape in November 2009. In the summer of 2010 we traveled from Florida to New England, then 56 days in the Canadian Maritimes and finally back to Florida. I, like many others on this forum, followed the towing procedures explicitly and had no problems. In March of 2011 we left Florida heading for Texas. Before we were out of Florida the car started smoking and as earlier said, puking transmission fluid. Had to wait until it cooled down. This happened a couple more times before we got to Texas. Hillcrest Ford in Huntsville, TX, checked the codes, said they only problem was that the transmission overheated and the fluid was burned. They charged me $270 to diagnose and change the fluid. When I got to Massachusetts I brought it in to a Ford dealer who checked out the transmission, said it was burnt to a crisp and Ford would replace the transmission under warranty. I spoke with both Hillcrest Ford and Ford Motor Company and the best they would do was to refund the $92 misdiagnosis charge but since I wanted the fluid changed (based on their diagnosis) I had to pay for that. So what's the final outcome?? We made it home safely and the 2010 Escape with 18000 miles has gone bye-bye. On the advice of our friend Fred who we have traveled with and has had no problem over the many thousands of miles we are now the proud owners of a 2011 Jeep Liberty Sport 4X4. That's our solution to the Ford problem.

We just blew our third transmission yeaterday on our 2010 Escape, we are in the process of shopping for a new toad. The stress of wondering if it will be allright when you get to your destination is not worth it. We also have followed the instructions from Ford to the letter and even had the car certified ready for towing at the Ford dealership, but it didn't make any difference. I did keep all of our rental receipts and such and after almost a year was reimbursed for car rental fees only. But you have to deal with Ford customer care and that is a pain, you just have to be persistent.

2011 Mercury Mariner, 2300 miles, in shop for transmission #3.
This is after transmission #2 installed on 4/22/2011 and towed
on 4 day, 700 mile trip. TSP set up by dealer.
I towed a CR-V about 80,000 miles with no problems!

Ford issued us a check for repurchase of our vehicle after we went through the Fl. Lemon Law claim (3 trans. transplants). ***We even received rimbursement for the base plate and installed brake assist system. Refer to STATE OF FLORIDA OFFICE OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL FLORIDA NEW MOTOR VEHICLE BOARD Case No.: 2011-0042/ORL.
Get tough, file Lemon Law claims in your state if your vehicle meets the criteria!

I've done more research about my transmission problem. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will take formal complaints regarding the Ford Escape Transmission default. You can file the complaint at there website https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/ or call them directly the number is on the webpage. I am also filing under the California lemon law arbitration board. File a complaint with the NHSTA concerning the erratic shifting and transmission failure. They have only received 8 concerning the 6 spd. auto. trans. in the 2010 Ford Escapes. After reviewing this post it seems if everyone who has experienced difficulty/failure of the trans. would file a claim it would raise a "red flag" concerning the defective transmission. We must be our own ADVOCATE concerning Ford's transmission defect. File a legitimate claim and hopefully the NHSTA will open an investigation.
