so I got lippy in the mod thread a few weeks ago and said how strong my rear bumper is and everyone who worries about hanging accesories on the rear bumper is paranoid....

This is the scene Sunday afternoon on the side of I-10 about 40 miles from home. This is a picture after I removed the cargo tray holding a wagon holding a propane stove (no tanks), and the aluminum framed BBQ pit. The 2" unpainted pipes are my flag pole holders. the gray pipe with yellow plug is my sewer hose.

I was VERY lucky and NOTHING was destroyed and I didn't kill anyone. Very grateful to the couple in the Gold Nissan Titan that flagged me down early enough. The BBQ pit has some scuffs on it from dragging the road, but it will serve as a reminder to take the advice of my friends on RV.net!!

Kudos for sharing this, because that's how we all learn and stay safe. I've never put anything on the rear bumper except for the spare. You post made sure that will be the limit for me.

Sounds like you came off pretty lucky. I saws a bumper carrying about a half dozen bikes make a "get-away" on I 70 once. It honestly looked like one of those cartoons where you see one thing then another sticking out of a cloud of dust. It was a lot funnier to me I'm sure than to the owner who apparently saw all of the commotion behind him without being flagged down. It's not the weight that usually does it but the momentum when hitting dips and bumps.

Thanks for being "man enough" to come back and admit it. Most would not have done it.

How much weight was how far back? Before and after shot would give more perspective.

We have a bike rack on our bumper. On our last trip we noticed that the bumper was tilted just a little, you could see that the bumper was giving at the point where it is welded to the frame. We brought the bikes back home on the back of the truck. And the bike rack is coming off the bumper. I had read a post on this site after mounting the bike rack on the bumper so I was keeping a close eye on it. Thanks for sharing.

I carry 4 bikes on my rear bumper with a 2" hitch adapter and hitch mounted bike rack. What I also did was install 2 stainless eye bolts throught the rear wall stud and bunk supports to support the weight of the bikes. what needs to be done is to keep the item(s) mounted on the bumper from bouncing up and down and tearing off the bumper. I`ve been doing this for thousands of miles with no failures or signs of failure. properly supported things can be mounted back there and be safe. I`ve seen bikes just mounted into a hitch on the rear and they bounce all over. I watched a guy in a campground with 2 bikes on a bike carrier go over a speed bump and the bikes and bumper bounced and flexed alot! don`t know how the guy made it there and home and any other trip without any issues. from what I seen it was going to happen soon.
