see the post above from "Posted: 09/21/11 04:32pm" 3/4 ton truck with 5th wheel. I would go this route with any type of camper or trailer though. Just much easier than 17.

we were there is Dec 2011. went through downtown, it wasn't too bad. though we pulled in after dinner, so went through the city around 6PM or so, and when we left it was morning of Jan 1, so a holiday.

Not sure if I would take 26 into downtown and weave back to 171/Folly Road.
The way to avoid Riverland is to stay on 171/Folly Road until Camp Road. No need to take 26 all the way into the city. You take 171/Folly Road to get to Riverland.
They just redid the cross town going through downtown Charleston which might make that portion a bit easier to deal with. They did a very nice job, a few lights but nothing hard to manuver through. This is the section between I26 and 171/Folly Road. Enjoy
