hello guys,

I have heard about the patches that are out there to repel mosquitoes.
They seems to be DEET free and uses vitamin B1.
has any of you guys tried them? and did it actually work?
I'm going camping this weekend and wondering if I should get one for my family!

Thanks

Can't speak for the effectiveness of B1, as a science professional my take is that all the data is on the side of DEET, proven safe and effective for many decades. Certainly if you find this substitute useful please share the results vs. DEET!

I've tried taking heavy doses of B vitimins when I heard that was supposed to help. I still got bit just as much, but the mosquitoes are probably a little more healthy now than they would have been otherwise.

I haven't tried the patches, but the Off Fan works pretty good for me. I just keep it with me and I haven't been bothered by mosquitoes yet.

Does the Off fan work when you're moving about, or only when sitting still? The package comments seem to indicate that it only works when you don't move around a lot...which is why I didn't get it.

Don't know if they work but here in Calgary folks are walking around with Bounce Sheets in their belts or in their pockets. They claim that it works but I have not tried it.

Not specific to B-1, but there was a consumer test on 20/20 or a similar show that tested 100% deet against some lower concentrations of Deet, against citronella spray. They had the subjects spray their arms and put them into a test area full of mosquitos. 100% deet kept the mosquitos off the arm for over 1 hour, lesser concentrations worked for shorter times and citronella spray kept the mosquitos away for nearly 20 seconds. DEET!!!

I worry about ticks too so I will stick with Deet. Here in Minnesota I don't mess with anything less.

We use spray with DEET. If you live in an area that has West Nile virus I wouldn't mess around with any unproven repellants.
