Mrs. Mike here! I am traveling alone to Canada and Alaska and have been unable to find correct info on car insurance. Need help please!
I have been told I need a special type of insurance for Canada then have also been told that my US insurance is sufficient. Any advice or ideas? Thanks so much. Sally

You have to ask your insurance company to give you an Inter Provincial Insurance card I believe it is. Some times called the '"pink card" Easy to obtain. It guarantees your insurance company will provide the minimum liability insurance coverages as required by Canadian Law.
Our liability coverages are higher than those required in some states. All our friends visiting get the cards and they are not charged for it.

Yup, just get the card. We have State Farm and they just give us a special card when we go to Canada. Takes maybe 5 minutes at our agent. Likely could do by mail, but our agent is nearby, friendly, and down right cute!

Sounds like I'm in trouble! I was planning to cross the border tomorrow...or is that already today? Progressive Ins. said my regular insurance was fine but I could get additional policy but needed original typed card, not faxed. But then they faxed me one anyway. Called Canadian Border Patrol and they said this type of policy was NOT required for enty into Canada. I can't find anything written anywhere about this requirement. Just info on proof of registration, passport, etc. I won't be able to sleep tonight worrying about it. but can't do anything with this being Sun and then the holiday on the 4th. Thanks for input. We traveled to Canada in June and thought we needed proof of insurance too. Our insurance agent told us it is not required any more. It was stopped a few years ago. Don't loose sleep. You are fine.

This question should be directed to your insurance agent rather than to us --- fact always trumps opinion.

I am Canadian, but I have understood the point of the card was in case of an accident.
& I, I took the road less travelled by.

Here are some facts---
Not every single insurance agent in the US is familiar with the Canadian Non-resident Inter-provincial Motor Vehicle Liability Card. Back when my agent was new I called to get one, he knew nothing about it. Had to insist he check into it.
Another fact is, you don't have to be an insurance agent to know about the Canadian Non-resident Inter-provincial Motor Vehicle Liability Card.

Yep, actually drove to all of these places---in the last eight years. Missed Rhode Island and New Jersey.

Just a note, I think the faxed copy would be fine. When you buy a new car in Canada, the insurance agent will fax you a copy of the new insurance card and that is accepted when getting the new licence plate. So if you have a faxed copy, don't worry and enjoy your time here.
