The 12V battery on my camper that I just got, smelled like rotten eggs when I got home. It was hot, steaming and bubbling. I unhooked it, then after it cooled down I filled it up with distiller water. I plugged it in today for about an hour, and it did the same thing. Is it the battery or something else?

It smelled like rotten eggs after only being charged from the tow vehicle? If so the battery is bad. Is this a new RV or purchased used?

update: Just looked at your profile. If it "boiled" just hooked to the tow vehicle the battery is bad. If it is the original battery (now 3 years old) and the pervious owner didn't take good care of it 3 years is about all your gonna get. Unless you are planning a lot of boondocking go to wal-mart and buy the biggest marine duty battery (~$120) that will fit in your space and you should be good

Just as a second check measure the voltage at your plug in hot wire. Should be around 14 volts but I doubt it is a problem with a relatively new truck and you would have killed your truck batterys too if that was a problem

Batteries are only rented. Time for a new one. Dangerous when they get that way. Be sure to ventilate and take the negative termnial off first. Safety googles are a great thing.

While I agree that the battery is bad, you should check the electrolyte levels in your batteries at least once a month and keep them proper to increase the life span of them. In addition, the converter voltage should be no more than 13.6V. Excessive converter voltage will cause a battery to boil the water away.

Might be the battery. Before you spend money, first check your charging voltage. Over voltage will boil a battery.

Batteries boiling on epically trailers if left plugged in may be a sign of one of two things. One of those is a low end single stage converter such as the Magnetek 6300 series.

Read on for the other.

When it boils after towing (From the tow vehicle) odds are very good you have a shorted cell or two, and the battery is TOAST.
