Washington created the exemption specifically because of Vancouver's proximity to Portland and trying to help their retailers. People who live in Vancouver pretty much don't shop there, so by luring Oregon residents over to Vancouver they are able to sell more. Washington has lower business taxes so the Washington retailers are able to undercut the Oregon retailers a tiny bit.

I doubt it is common in other states.

Didn't realize the business taxes were lower too, but I thought the exemption was because of the close proximity and people like you said were going over to Oregon because they save quite a bit even if they have to spend some on fuel to get there and so I thought this was only for the southern portion but as someone pointed out this is not the case.

I know that the sales tax exemption even works on vehicles if you title/register your vehicle in Oregon or another state but you might pay sales tax or a use tax in whatever state you register it in so vehicles don't really get away with the taxes especially if you want to register it in Washington at some point.

I was reading a web site "Best states to retire to" or some such.

Turns out some states waive the sales tax.... FOR EVERYONE, Resident or not. And I think one of the states mentioned above was on that list. (No I won't say which one)

Fact is... If you buy something and 'Bring it home' with you your are obligated to pay use tax on that the Use tax is the difference between any sales tax you paid at time and place of purchase and your state's income tax.. So it's never waived. Just postphoned.

I think Nevada is also a no sales tax state as well

As for the use tax, yeah I forgot about that but who actually reports that? Nobody? I mean who wants to keep track of when you buy something out of state and pay taxes on it in another state bring it home only to pay more tax on it when you file your state income tax?

Also I order a lot of things online so I don't worry about sales tax unless the company has a store in the state. I did order stuff from RAM Mounts, ordinarily I'd have it shipped to Oregon but I had to have stuff sent to me in Washington and still didn't pay sales tax even though they reside in WA state.

No, sorry, but as a Montana resident if I buy something in Washington, and I tell the sales person I am from Montana, and show my Montana Driver's License, I can often get by without paying the sales tax on the items I purchased. The tax is NOT postponed, it is never charged or collected. I just don't have to pay it, period. It has nothing to do with Montana Income Tax!
If I buy it in Washington tax exempt, and bring it back to Montana, there is NO tax due.

The stores in SE Washington (Tri-cities area) mostly honor the sales tax exemption, as well.

I contacted the Washington Dept of Revenue about this several years ago. It is a courtesy and not a requirement that stores in Washington honor Oregon sales-tax-exemption.

I usually ask for the exemption and some stores give it and some don't. Large chains are the best about this. I have walked out of stores that refuse to give it, too.

The only places I've taken advantage of this deal are the visitor centers at Mt. St. Helens because they usually ask if customers are Oregon residents. I never ask anywhere else and just pay the sales tax.

Walmart in most southern communities in WA would ask the customers, now they quit asking instead they have a sign and you must tell them or they won't give you credit after the fact.

Walmart has nothing to gain or lose if customers pay no sales tax so why would they quit asking?

If they won't refund the tax after the fact my answer would be to return everything at customer service.

The site is Retirement Living Information Center. There's no sales tax in Oregon. And yes, you're supposed to pay your home state's sales tax on purchases out of state, but if it doesn't have to be registered or you don't have to notify your state for some other reason, they'd have a hard time checking on you. Take internet purchases for instance. My state (Ohio) asks for the total amount of items that you've purchased out of state on their income tax form, but I'd be very surprised if anybody ever enters a number in that block, or even knows how much to enter.

Everyone pays the sales tax in Rhode Island. If I buy something in a state with no sales tax the state of RI expects me to file a form and pay a "use tax" to RI.

Indiana charges sale tax, no matter where you are from. I was going to order my 5ver from the Factory and was told if I took delivery in Indians I would have to pay their sale tax. That was a deal breaker.

Interesting, since I've bought cars in WA and CA and didn't have to pay sales tax as long as it was not registered in their state; of course if you buy it used you may be able to (in some states) prove that sales tax was already paid on that vehicle and you should not have to pay again in the state you intend to register it in.

But I wonder how much difference there would've been for delivery charge vs you taking delivery and paying the sales tax? If you had let the dealer in your state take delivery so you didn't have to pay tax you would've had to pay the delivery cost.
