We live in Southern Ontario and cross the border a lot with our M.H.
On Friday we crossed from Buffalo, NY to Fort Erie and got the standard questions. Also we were asked if we had a computer on board, and if so, how many. No two border crossings are the same, but we have never been asked about a computer before.
Has anyone else been asked about computers recently? Any idea why this would come up - all I can think of is some sort of a survey.
Incidently, we answered we had one computer on board - that was the end of the topic.

We have not crossed the border 'Out West' for a few years now but I know I have never had a problem. Coming into Canada in our area they never ask about food. Going into US is more of a problem. Citrus is always banned, and tomatoes are considered citrus. The past couple of years goat, mutton and lamb has been banned. Also for entering US if you have a pet, it is best to have pet food that is made in US. As a general rule, as long as vegetables/fruits are in season and are packaged as product of Canada or US, there is no concern. Crossing with grapes during the winter for example might cause a problem as most likely that would be a product of Chili or some other southern country.
I'm sure lots of forum members who have traveled to Alaska this year will be able to answer your question. Canadian inspectors at all border crossings are mainly looking for guns/ammo, drugs, liquor, cigarettes and illegals.

Check the stickys at the top of this section to see the links to regulations for border crossings.
Re. computers, it's a coming thing. Expect it and look out. I have picked up on reports of where people's computers were held for checking.
& remember some carrying computers and not careful about what they had stored have been arrested, charged, tried and found guilty of crimes. The most famous one was a Bishop who had pornography of children on his computer when returning from a trip to Thailand.
& I, I took the road less travelled by.

Little Kopit is correct, computers have been "checked" at borders. Sometimes the checking has caused issues with the computer.
My former (I retired) employer, by policy, all laptops taken out of the office where encrypted, period. One of them got checked and when the Agents found it was encrypted they went nutz. Took lots of calls and lots of running around to get it returned. The Agents where convinced it contained drug/terrorism/something info, rather then just sensitive info.

When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.

We cross the border 2-3 times a week and have never been asked 'the computer' question. One thing that I do know from my work days is besides the terrorist info check, they also look for anyone moving intellectual property.

Everyone in my family has their own laptop for our travel. Every overnight stay they come along and have never heard that question once.

Whether or not 'you' have been asked about a computer is immaterial...border services can ask, and can seize for further inquiries. In either direction, I want to add.

Expect to hear the question more often. They also may expect to hold onto the lap top until their "expert" comes in and clears it. Then they will forward it to you or you can go back to the border and pick it up.
