It was...

I had a 2006 RAM 1500 Quad cab. I towed our 27.5 ft 5th wheel with it. It towed it ok. Best mileage I saw was around 11 mpg. Worst was maybe 8. I didn't like the way the 545RFE is geared. The RAM half-ton needs a true 6-speed auto. But with the 8-speed on the way, I predict it'll be damn near perfect. With that trailer I was near or at max payload so I upgraded to a 3500 Megacab 6.7 diesel.. Night and day difference in towing that trailer.

I had a 04 1500 QC, now have an 2008 1500 Megacab, Hemi. More stable towing, better transmission. My 5th wheel is 28ft and total combined weight towing is right at 15,000lbs, with 1500lbs pin weight. I was definately overloaded on the rear axle weight with my QC, but was under my total combined weight. Diesel would have been nice, but I don't tow enough to justify the extra cost of the diesel option. As I have said in another post, the only half ton that can really handle a light 5th wheel is the new Ford F150 with the HD towing option with the 3.5 Eco motor. Payload that rivals most 3/4 tons and easy on fuel when not towing

Had a 2005 QC ram 1500 with 4.7 and it did not have much power for 6,000 lb trailer. Now using 2006 mega cab 5.7 for same trailer and am much happier, but the 1500 mega cab is more in the 2500 category. Both trucks give me 10 mpg towing, but current truck only getting me 12mpg average around town not towing.

Had a 2004 1500 QC with the Hemi pulling a 7000lbs Jayco. Towed well mpg between 7-8mpg. Except when we went out East (Cap Breton) average was 5mpg.
Now have a 2011 Silverado with the 6 speed tranny pulling 8000Lbs Denali with the ProPride 3P Hitch averaging 9-10mpg. Love the combo

Just a quick FYI, the Megacabs have a 3/4 ton frame.
