This is our first year to actually get to travel as full time rver's. We were suppose to last year but because of my dw illness treatment was imperative. So here we are up in Livingston MT, next destination St Regis MT & Glacier. Trouble is we don't know which way to go from there. West to the Oregon Coast or East toward ND and norther MN. We certainly don't want to go south until weather cools so I'm asking: What is there to see either way? As we have never been to either. (Oregon coast down to northern CA then on to Yosemite or toward the many lakes in MN.)

This may be the last trip we get to make so it's important we know which is best. One thing we have found out since being up here in WY and MT is that it's a little hard for my dw to breathe and the altitude has resulted in a lot of exhaustion.

God willing we will be spending October in the Ozarks of AR and I know there is a lot of desert on the way back from CA.

Also, we are going to spend a night or longer at the Nugget RV Park at St Regis MT. Has anyone been there and is it a nice place?

Thank you so much for any input or advice you can give us.

Don V.

P.S. We are driving a 35 ft Winnebago Voyage gas engine pulling a Town & Country on a tow dolly.

I was there a few years ago and found it to be a very nice park.

Don, I would highly recommend your travel plans to include the west coast including the Oregon coast, I believe you will enjoy the beauty of the area.

We have been both ways from Glacier. Wonderful drive through Oregon along the Columbia River. Visited Astoria, then down coast to Northern CA. The other way; spent about 3 weeks in Grand Marias, MN, a delightful harbor town on Lake Superior. We are stuck in Arkansas until August 1st. Happy travels and GO RAZORBACKS

Personally I would opt to go West. As mentioned the drive South thru Oregon along the coast is beautiful. Northern CA and further South is great as well. We need to get to Yosemite as well, I've seen pictures but sure they don't do it any justice as to being there. Good luck with your decision and enjoy your trip regardless of which way you decide to go. Happy Motoring!

Go west. It's going to be hot (90's) and humid up here. It was 62°F here yesterday. Starting today we'll see a rapid temperature rise into the upper 80's and 90's. This more mature body will be living in the A/C until it cools down a wee bit. Plus Glacier still has a lot of snow to keep things cool.

I lived my first 35 years in MN and the last 30 in OR & WA. Go West. MN is nice but as others have said OR is fantastic. And here's a tip many haven't thought of. BUGS! The mosquitoes can be really bad in MN and I can remember summer evenings where the bugs outside were were beating against the windows so hard I had to turn the volume up on the TV. It is much easier to "relax" in OR.

Idea (and having lived here, what I would do): The high desert of eastern Oregon is completely different from the western (the other side of the Cascades). If going west on I-84 I'd suggest taking Hwy. 97 south (exit 104) toward Redmond/Bend. It's a big RV area and I'm sure you will find many places to stay/investigate. I lived in Prineville, OR for 3 years (30 min. east of Redmond). Wonderful little town in a big valley. Going east from Prineville is a beautiful Natl. Forest and only about 30-45 min. from the grocery store. One could easily dry camp there for a couple days or find a campground. To the south out of Prineville is the Prineville Resivior and a beautiful state park. Beautiful drive up to the park.
I live halfway up that hill overlooking town.

Now that you've seen some of the best of the Oregon high desert I'd head toward Portland on Hwy 26 out of Madras (check a map) and then take Hwy 35 north around the east side of Mt. Hood and drop back down to the gorge at Hood River. You will have missed only a few miles of the gorge and it gets better at Hood River anyway. Driving the gorge from east to west (views better than the other way around) is a must. The first time I took that drive in '68 (before I moved to OR) I spent most of the drive with my mouth open (good thing there aren't many mosquitoes in OR!!!). It's so beautiful. Check out Multnomah Falls on the way.

Have a great trip whichever way you go.

Head west, do Seattle, Olympic National Park then down the 101 for a month or 2. Once you hit Mexico in October or so, head east for 6 months, end up in AR

As a point of comparison to the mid-west and southern states, the high temperature in Seattle yesterday was 69F and humidity aroud 35%. We haven't seen an 80 degree high since late August of last year!

Come across Eastern WA on US2 then head for Pateros and cross the Cascades on SR20. Scenery is magnificent, the road is good and you'll still see remants of the 75' of snow that WADOT had to plow through to get the highway open.

Once you get on the western side, you may want to stay on SR20 over to Anacortes, then go down Whidbey Island to Coupeville and take the ferry to Port Townsend. Continue south on 20 to US101 and do the north and west side of the Olympic National Park (don't miss a trip up Hurricane Ridge) then cross the Columbia River on the US101 bridge going into Astoria. At that point the Oregon Coast is yours all the way to the California border if you wish.

Have a good trip whichever way you go.
