I am looking at buying a Diesel Pusher and was wondering if a LP generator will be louder than a diesel generator?

The noise wouldn't be my concern. Running out of propane would be my concern. The convenience of just ensuring you have diesel fuel in your tank makes life easier for me. Just an opionion...

Surprisingly, probably a LP generator will be air cooled, and yes more noise than a water cooled diesel generator.

If you are out there test driving them, start them up and see.

Quiet Diesel is much quieter. I wouldn't have an LP genset on a DP.

All the LP gensets I have ever seen were Onan Marquis that are air cooled and run at a constant RPM.

THe QD's are inverter type that change RPM's based on load, so at lighter loads the RPM drops which makes less noise. They are liquid cooled which makes for a quieter motor.

Add in the fact that a LP genset will burn a gallon of LP an hour and you will running to the LP station often.

Of course, if you never use your genset, it doesn't mattter as much. I run mine 500 hours a year.

x2 on running out of propane. Finding propane in the my biggest pain in the neck when traveling. I have a propane generator and I am always worried I will need to use the generator and not have enough propane.
Go diesel - you will have 150 gallons instead of 20-40 and it is cheaper to run than propane.

The more expensive generators, and much quieter generators, are diesels that run at 1200-1800 RPMs, instead of the 3600 RPM's for most gas and propane generators. Onan makes diesel generators that operate at 1800 RPM's, as well as other manufacturers.

Just like the portable generator market quiet costs more. I believe the Onan Quiet Diesel series is one of the quietest generators available for Class A coaches. We have a 7500w QD in our coach and it is almost not quite silent (-: Our last two coaches had propane generators one a 5500 Onan and the other a EV 6010 Honda. Both were unacceptably noisy to me and I bought a small EU 1000i Honda portable for battery charging. It was noisier than I liked so I built a sound deadening box for it and it is now as quiet as the Onan QD. It has about 1000 hours on it.

I would love to see more pictures of the box for the generator. As quiet as the 1000 is I would really like it to be almost silent.

My 6.5K LP Generator from 2006 to 2010 on a 40 gal tank.

Almost all Flying J's have LPG at the RV Islands

Maintenance cost is much lower on a LP generator then a Diesel one.
No antifreeze to change or belts that can break or need replaced.

YC-1,

I don't know how far back this Forum archives go but I posted a bunch of construction photos when I built it probably 5 years ago. I don't think I know where they are now here. I will take a look when I get a chance and see if I can find them.

It is fun when folks walk by and ask "What is in the box?. I tell them and usually the next question is "What does it sound like when it is running". I just smile and say "Its running now" (-:

Jim

Edit

I found two on my Photobucket account but somewhere there are about 20.
